Carroll and Milton Petrie Student Emergency Grant Fund

The Carroll and Milton Petrie Student Emergency Grant Fund has been created for the purpose of providing quick response emergency grants to matriculated students in good standing with short-term financial emergencies to enable them to remain in school, rather than being forced to take a leave of absence or drop out.

Petrie Grant Award Guidelines

Students who demonstrate need and are facing a current unexpected emergency may apply for this grant. All grants are subject to approval with documentation and verification to support your application. Examples of emergencies to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Travel home for illness or death in the immediate family
  • Homelessness due to loss of housing, for student and dependent family members
  • Documented theft of books, and other essential academic belongings
  • Medical bills for uninsured necessary appointments, accidents , surgery prescription eyeglasses, or essential dental work
  • Reimbursement for transportation card to get to and from school and/or medical appointments
  • Sudden loss of childcare to cover academic schedule period
  • Victims of domestic violence
  • Fire or theft
  • Temporary job loss
Petrie Foundation Grants will not be given for:
  • Full or partial tuition costs
  • Previous debts to the College
  • Legal representation for a CSI disciplinary proceeding
  • Legal representation in a criminal or civil proceeding, including child support
  • More than one emergency in the academic year
Eligibility Requirements for the Petrie Foundation Grant:
  • Undergraduate students must be matriculated and be in good academic standing
  • Graduate students must be matriculated and be in good academic standing
  • Students must have a record of good conduct
  • Students must have paid tuition to the College of Staten Island
How much can a student apply for and who reviews the application and determines the award amount?

The maximum cash award amount is $1,500.00. Only in extraordinary circumstances and with appropriate documentation will an award exceed $1,500.00.

The Emergency Assistance Committee for the offices of Student Affairs, Financial Aid, and other student services offices will review applications and make their recommendations. Final approval requires the signature of the Vice President of Student Affairs or designee. A student applicant may be required to meet with any of the above to further assess the merits of the emergency grant request.
