Academic Advisement
A
ACADEMIC CALENDAR:
A calendar that lists the dates of registration, college deadline dates, holidays and other important information. This calendar can be found in the SCHEDULE OF CLASSES.
ASSOCIATE DEGREE:
A two-year degree.
B
BACCALAUREATE SECTIONS:
Baccalaureate sections are restricted sections for students in the Baccalaureate Program.
BACHELOR OR BACCALAUREATE DEGREE:
A degree, which is generally completed with 120, credits.
BURSAR:
The Bursar handles tuition payments and check distribution.
C
CATALOG:
The book, which describes all programs, offered by the College of Staten Island, with information about policies, etc. This is the student's contract with the school.
CONVERSION DAYS:
When classes meet, days may be changed in order for classes to meet for 15 weeks.
CO-REQUISITES:
Courses that must be take at the same tome (i.e. GEO 100 and GEO 101).
CUNY ASSESSMENT TESTS:
CWAT (CUNY Writing Test)
CRAT (CUNY Reading Test
CMAT (CUNY Mathematics Test)
CURRICULUM:
The course of study for a degree.
CREDIT:
Units assigned upon successful completion of college-level courses.

DEAN'S LIST:
An honor entered on the transcript of students. For more information see the college catalog.
DEPARTMENT:
An organizational unit that offers courses in a specific subject of a specific group of academic subjects.
DEPARTMENTAL PLACEMENT EXAM (DPE):
The DPE is an additional mat test to place students in the proper math course.
DROP:
CSI allows students to drop or withdraw from courses without academic penalty during a specific period of time. The last day to drop classes is posted in the academic calendar for each semester.

ELECTIVES:
Electives are courses that are other than required or major courses. Each degree requires some electives.
EQUATED CREDITS:
Equated credits are assigned to remedial courses for financial aid purposes.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
This requirement is designed to provide a broad general education, allowing students to explore several fields of knowledge and to acquire educational breadth and enrichment in the sciences, social sciences, the arts and humanities.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE:
Cumulative average of a student's grades.
M
MAJOR:
Field of specialization in college.
MATRICULATE:
An admission term that means you have applied for a degree program.
MINOR:
A minor is a secondary field of study.
P
PLACEMENT EXAM:
An exam designed to place students in the proper course (i.e. Biology, Foreign Language). A requirement that must be met before entry into a course.
PROBATION:
A student is placed on probation by the College when their GPA falls below 2.o. The student is limited to a program of 14 equated credits per semester until the GPA is brought above 2.0.

REQUIRED COURSE:
Courses needed for a specific major.
REGISTRAR:
The title of the person who is responsible for registering students in courses and for maintaining their academic records and current status.
REMEDIAL COURSES:
Courses that are designed to bring students up to college level work.

SCHEDULE OF CLASSES:
This is a listing of all classes that will be offered during the coming semester.
SECTION NUMBER:
A section number identifies the specific class a student is registered for in a given semester. (i.e. ENG 111 section 1822)
SYLLABUS:
An outline of class requirements, indicating assignments, reading and brief description of the courses and grading procedures.

TBA:
An acronym for "To Be Announced". Used in the schedule of classes booklet to indicate that at the time of printing an adjunct instructor had not yet been selected to teach the course.
TRANSCRIPT:
The official record of courses taken, grades received, grade point average and degrees awarded. Transcripts are maintained in the Registrar's Office.
W
WITHDRAWAL:
See Drop.
UNOFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL:
Grade given when a student does not follow official procedures for withdrawal from a class. WU is the equivalent of an F.

Please be aware that advisor availability for continuing students (those already enrolled at CSI) will be limited on certain days and/or times through the remainder of the semester and in JUNE & JULY on those days when our staff participates in
Advisement & Registration sessions for first-time entering freshmen & entering Transfer students.
Students unable to meet with one of our advisors during our listed availability may meet with an advisor in the Office of Evening, Weekend & Summer Session. They are located in 2A-204 and can be reached by phone @ 718-982-2155.
The office of Academic Advisement does not advise students regarding their Major Requirements. *However, students in academic majors are encouraged to meet with an advisor in our office to conduct a review of their General Education requirements. *
Students who have already declared their majors are strongly encouraged to meet with a faculty member from their academic department as soon as possible. We recommend phoning the departments in advance to confirm the office hours for advisement or to

make an appointment if necessary to ensure that someone is available for a meeting. Faculty availability may be limited throughout the summer.

We encourage you to call our office at 718-982-2280 to make an appointment to meet with an advisor to discuss your plans for the upcoming semester and to complete your registration.

INFORMATION FOR NEW FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN:
NEW FIRST-TIME students must be tested in order to be advised and registered. Even if students are exempt from the Reading, Writing and Math assessment tests, they must still take the ACT/Mathematics examination for placement purposes.
If a new student has been admitted but has not received a letter from UAPC inviting them to a testing session, he/she should contact the College Testing Office, 718-982-2380, regarding a testing appointment.
Appointments for advisement and registration for new students are given out in the testing sessions and later by mailings. If a student receives two appointments for advisement and registration, he/she may attend either one.
If a new student has taken the assessment tests but has not received an appointment for advisement and registration, he/she may call the Office of Academic Advisement, 718-982-2280, regarding an appointment.
Please be aware that new students will not be able to register if they have not taken all entrance and placement exams or if they have not submitted their Immunization records (MMR) and Meningitis Vaccination Response Form to the Health Center, which is
located in Building 1C, Room 112. Students should also take this opportunity to submit their Medical Certification Form for PED 190-Fitness for Life. All of these forms can be accessed and printed from the following websites:
