Faculty lines for Fall 2010 (searches conducted during the 2009/10 academic year)

As of September, the budget appears able to support at least fifteen (15) new full time faculty hires with a start date of Fall Semester 2010.  These searches will be conducted with an overbooking strategy similar to last year with the target of conducting about twenty (20) searches.  CUNY has stipulated that eight (8) of the new hires must be at the lecturer or instructor level.  This means that we will attempt to hire a minimum of 8 lecturers/instructors and about 7-8 tenure track faculty.  It is anticipated that any hiring done beyond 15 will be for tenure track lines and we will not go beyond the 8 lecturers/instructors given by CUNY.

All searches will need to be at the regional/national level (as appropriate for the level of search) with the goal of having a robust inclusive pool of candidates.  These lines are a combination of new lines given to us by CUNY, a new senior line from the graduate center, and anticipated departures and retirements.  Given the increase from the graduate center this year, it seems reasonable that one of these searches be conducted for a potential distinguished professor.

Hiring for the past two years has been robust and based on the assumption that all departments needed lines.  This year we need to be more strategic about allocation.  At a minimum, each department that wants to conduct a faculty search should first discuss the need with their respective dean to develop a data-based request for a new faculty line.

Given that the hiring process can change throughout the year, the P&B Subcommittee on the Allocation of Faculty Lines will recommend a priority list of up to twenty-five (25) positions that can be allocated throughout the year if more positions become available.  There will be less need to overbook the lecturer/instructor lines than the tenure track lines and two lists will likely be needed; however, the subcommittee will make a recommendation on the details of the overbooking process.

Request for Proposals: Departmental Need and Areas of Focus

The allocation of faculty lines for next semester will be based on a combination of an analysis of departmental need and resources and on strengthening CSI’s areas of focus by encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.  The committee will attempt to honor as many prior allocations as possible as supported by the justification while also devoting some lines to respond to new needs and opportunities.  This request for faculty lines is designed to foster faculty discussion that can lead to recognition for CSI as an expert in a given focus area and enhance the College’s reputation.  There are no pre-determined areas of focus that will take preference but any proposal should be based on an existing base of strength in the area for which additional faculty are being requested.

Requirements:

  • The body of the proposal should be limited to two (2) pages and should speak to the following points, which can be concisely outlined in bulleted lists.
    • Department(s) or program(s) name(s) and lines requested.
    • Identification of departmental need, based on existing resources.
    • Statement about the status of the departmental student learning outcomes and assessment plans.
  • Proposals must be submitted to the office of the provost either electronically (preferred) or in hard copy by Monday Sept 28 at 9:00 p.m.  If via electronic submission, please send to: provost@mail.csi.cuny.edu.
  • Appendices of relevant material and data that might aid in making decisions may be attached.
  • Departments are encouraged to submit interdisciplinary (two or more departments and/or divisions) proposals.  This does not mean that the individual faculty have to be interdisciplinary but that hiring in a department will support a broader initiative.
  • Multiple lines for multiple departments can be requested on a single RFP.

Review Criteria:
The following review criteria will be used to evaluate the proposals:

  • Identification of needs based on existing resources (faculty, support staff, budget, space).
  • Identification of opportunities for research & scholarship, grants, and/or program development or enhancement.
  • Identification of opportunities for graduate and/or undergraduate students.
  • Identification of how the proposed hiring can contribute to a developing area of focus.
  • Identification of other factors deemed to be relevant to the request.
