BLOODHOUNDS SHOCK CSI IN TOURNAMENT OPENER
2/18 -- The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team suffered a stunning defeat in the quaterfinal round of the 2006 CUNYAC/Con Edison's Men's Basketball Tournament, falling to the number seven seeded John Jay Bloodhounds 61-58 Saturday afternoon in Willowbrook, NY. CSI had won six of the seven previous tournament meetings betweeen the two squads.
Junior forward Hakeem Kased (FDR/Brooklyn, NY) was sensational for the Bloodhounds, scoring 12 of his 18 points in the 2nd half. Freshman Alex Valerio (Francis Lewis/Flushing, NY) also chipped in, netting 18 points while snatching 7 rebounds. In a losing effort, Senior guard Jeremy Smalls (Curtis/Staten Island, NY) paced the Dolphins, dropping in 19 points, grabbing 4 rebounds and tallying 4 steals.
The Dolphins took an early 5-0 lead two minutes into the contest, but the Bloodhounds stormed back and outscored CSI 26-12 over the next fifteen minutes, taking a 26-17 lead. Tony Petosa, in attempt to slow down the Bloodhounds attack, took a thirty-second timeout. Following the timeout, the Dolphins put together an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to close the half, thanks to two Dennis Echols (Stroudsburg/Jamaica, NY) free-throws, a pair of layups by Kelvin Luna (Flushing/West Hempstead, NY), a trey by Smalls, and a buzzer-beating lay up by Gari Blackett (Brooklyn College Academy/Brooklyn, NY). CSI regained their confidence, and entered the locker room with a 28-26 lead.
The resilient Bloodhounds would battle back, opening up the second half on an 11-5 run to take a six point lead, 39-33, with 14:47 remaining in the game. The Bloodhounds stayed persistent, and after two free-throws from Kased, built their lead up to nine, 48-39, with 8:35 to play. CSI stayed within arms-length distance of the Bloodhounds, and trailed by six, 58-52, when Sean Weismuller nailed a three-pointer on the right baseline, cutting CSI to within 58-55 with 21 seconds remaining. After Jason Parker (Bishop Loughlin/Brooklyn, NY) nailed two free throws to put John Jay back up by five, Smalls swished a triple from the left side, bringing CSI to within 2, 60-58, with seven seconds remaining.
Aramis Ramos (Washingtonville/Washingtonville, NY), who finished with 11 points, hit just one of two from the charity stripe, allowing the Dolphins to take a final three-pointer, but sophomore guard Mike Comick's (Warren Hills/Washington, NY) trey fell short at the buzzer.
"I felt all throughout the season that we were one of the better defensive teams in CUNY" said John Jay coach Charles Jackson. "We knew we hed to limit [Dennis] Echols' touches and force him from getting good position on the block. We put good ball pressure on CSI all day and limited their physical size."
Despite the loss, CSI finished their season with a winning overall record (13-12) and their fifth CUNYAC North Division Championship in the last 6 seasons, finishing 2005-06 with a CUNY mark of 9-4.
BASKETBALL SPLITS WITH MEDGAR ON MATTY WHITE DAY
2/11--As the Dolphins tried to stay ahead of the impending snowstorm, their CUNYAC finale doubleheader with Medgar Evers was moved up to a 12 noon tipoff. The women avenged their earlier loss to Medgar Evers with a 91-69 victory over the cougars. Four Dolphins scored in double figures led by freshman Nicole Estrada's 21 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Acasha Gordon and Kim Thompson added 17 points apiece while Melanie D'Ambrosi knocked down 11 points and added 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. CSI improved to 15-8 on the season, and finished 10-3 in CUNYAC play. The Dolphins have clinched the #2 seed in next week's CUNY Tournament to be held at CSI. The squad will host Briarcliffe College in a non-conference tuneup for the CUNY Tournament on Wednesday night at 7pm as they will pay tribute to their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
The men were playing their final home game of the season in today's finale, and they honored seniors Jeremy Smalls and Justin Martiniuk in a pre-game ceremony. The Dolphins' inconsistent play this season was evident again this day, as they found themselves trailing 42-40 at halftime and then working furiously all through the second half to come back from the deficits they put themselves in. Medgar made the plays down the stretch and handed CSI an 87-79 loss. The Dolphins (12-11, 9-4 CUNY) have already clinched the #2 seed in next week's CUNYAC tournament to be held at CSI, but they'll need consistent play throughout in order to have hopes of getting back to the championship game for the second straight year. Also in jeopardy is Coach Petosa's 13 year post-season streak. At one game over .500, CSI's Wednesday night season finale at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) takes on some importance other than just a CUNY Tournament tuneup. As for the game, the Dolphins were led by Jeremy Smalls with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Sean Weismuller added 16 points and led all rebounders with 11 boards. Kelvin Luna scored 15, and Mike Comick added 11 points in the loss. The Cougars improved to 9-15, 5-8 in CUNY play, and were led by Perry Wilkes' 32 points.
In a special halftime ceremony, the CSI Athletics family payed tribute to longtime assistant coach Matty White, who has retired after 17 years of service to the College. Coach White was presented with a plaque, and the 500+ fans in attendance gave him a rousing ovation. Thank you Coach White and best of luck to you in your retirement from all of us at CSI!
DOLPHINS BATTLE PAST YELLOW JACKETS, 94-78
2/8--The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team used a late surge to widen the gap and hold on to defeat the visiting Yellow Jackets of New York City College of Technology, 94-78.
Dennis Echols had a game-high double-double 22 points and 11 rebounds for CSI (12-10, 9-3 CUNY). Clyde Forteau also had a game-high 22 points in the loss for the Yellow Jackets (7-15, 6-6 CUNY).
The Dolphins dominated in the first half as they closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 19 point lead into the locker room (46-27). CSI stayed close with that margin well into the second half before City Tech responded with a 11-4 run and closed the gap to just seven points with just under five minutes to play. Forteau led the charge with 6 points during the run. From there the Dolphins settled down and took advantage of three missed shots as well as two missed free-throws to gain back their margin and hang on for the victory.
Kelvin Luna chipped in with 16 points off the bench while teammate Mike Comick contributed 13 points in the win. NYCCT had four players in double digits including Otis Saylee (21), Kareem Hanley (20) and Danul Cabbagestalk (10).
The Dolphins head back to CUNY play as they take on Medgar Evers College on Saturday, February 11th at 3:00pm. There will be a tribute to longtime retired assistant coach Matty White as well as senior day here at the Sports and Rec Center.
DOLPHINS HOLD ON AGAINST BROOKLYN, 76-73
2/1--The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team recorded five critical free throws in the last 17 seconds to hold on and defeat Brooklyn College, 76-73, Wednesday night in Brooklyn, NY.
The win improves CSI to 11-9 and 8-3 in CUNY play with two conference games remaining. The loss drops Brooklyn to 6-15 and 1-9 in conference action.
CSI led by as many as 14 points with just over three minutes remaining in the second half. But the Bridges would not go away as they chipped away pulling within one with just five seconds remaining. Forced by the clock, Brooklyn fouled CSI's Dennis Echols who would go on to nail both free throws and give CSI a three point advantage. The Bridges' Miguel Lopez then attempted a despiration three-point attempt at the buzzer which failed to give CSI a much needed eighth CUNY win.
Echols finished with a team-high 20 points and three blocks, while Gari Blackett recorded a double-double 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Dolphins enjoy some time off and will head to the road to take on Farmingdale State University on Monday, February 6th beginning at 7pm.

CSI would continue to stay poised, going on to defeat the Mariners swimmingly to once again get over the .500 mark (10-9).
