SWK 732 Introduction to Social Work Practice with People with Disabilities
3 credits; 3 hours
First of four courses in the Social Work Practice with People with Disabilities concentration. It introduces the student to the emerging, multidisciplinary field of disabilities. This course will teach the social construction of disabilities, which is distinct from a medical model of disabilities. Included are definitions, early history of disabilities, the disability rights movements, eugenics, policy that impacts people with disabilities, legal issues, self-advocacy, and disability culture. This course provides the foundation for the three courses on social work practice with people with disabilities across the life span. A grade of B or better is required in this course.
