Intensive Italian Language Program
Professor Blerina Likollari, Adjunct Instructor: College of Staten Island/CUNY
This course will provide the background necessary for the students to understand basic Italian language conversation, contemporary practical customs, as well as prepare them for higher level studies of the language. This knowledge will be based on developing students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills within a cultural frame of reference which will clearly reflect the richness of Italian language and culture. The course will help prepare students to demonstrate their level of Italian proficiency across the three communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational), and throughout five goal areas-communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. These important steps will be taken through a variety of methods which will include lectures, readings, music, quizzes, class visits to authentic Italian food restaurant and other points of interest. The course will be taught in both English and Italian languages and will encourage the students to reply in Italian.

The curriculum which will focus on problem solving using two basic materials: clay (Roma Plastilina) and paper mache. The clay projects involve mass; the paper mache projects concentrate on planar space. This course represents an abbreviated version of a sculpture section offered at CSI for years. Intuitive solutions to problems will be emphasized, but balanced by attention to three-dimensional space. An excellent course for anyone interested in sculpture.
