English majors can choose from four concentrations: Literature, Writing, Linguistics, or Dramatic Literature. Each concentration requires 40 credits of coursework. All English majors take three courses in common (ENL 290 Introduction to the study of Literature, ENL 300 British and American literary traditions, and ENL 310 World Literature in contexts); the remaining seven courses vary according to the concentration. English majors thinking of a high school teaching career may also follow the Adolescence Education Sequence, which can be combined with any of the concentrations. The sequence includes ENL 323: Coming of Age Narratives, one of two linguistics course options, and a two-year series of courses in the Education department.
