The Resource Center for the Deaf (RCD) is a special satellite location for the Office of Disability Services located in Building 1N, Room 115. The RCD is also the location of the Multi-Media Regional Center which is a CUNY-wide resource for the development of technological solutions in providing access and accommodations for CUNY students who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing. The efforts of the staff members of both of these initiatives contribute to a culture of access and excellence at the College of Staten Island.
The Resource Center for the Deaf
Students who have a need for interpreters can schedule requested services through staff members at this location. Other services such as note-taking and individualized academic support are also available. Please schedule a visit to the Resource Center for the Deaf. Discuss with staff members your needs and learn about the services available and the procedures in place to ensure access and success.
The Multi-Media Regional Center
Technological innovation has created broad avenues of access for college students who are hard-of-hearing. The Multi-Media Regional Center works at providing total access and full integration into the teaching and learning process through utilizing the latest technology and working closely with students, faculty and staff CUNY-wide. Students who are hard-of-hearing and requesting services, as well as interested staff and faculty from throughout CUNY, can learn about the signature service of the Multi-Media Regional Center, the CUNY CART Initiative, by scheduling an appointment with staff.

What is CART Service at CUNY?
- CART Service at CUNY is the instant transcription of a professor’s spoken word, as well as classroom dialogue, into printed text.
- Using notebook computers, mask-microphones used by providers in students’ classrooms, and speech-to-text software, the spoken word appears on a laptop screen.
- The provider listens to what is said, and voices the spoken word into a mask-microphone.
- Students can see the text on a laptop screen in real time if they sit near the provider.
- CART providers can move from room to room, or event to event, and operate in almost any classroom environment.
- Remote CART service provides the same service for students, but the provider is facilitating the service from a remote location through a microphone that a student attaches to a laptop. The student is able to see the text of the class on his or her laptop screen.
In the event staff members are not available when you call or visit, please contact the Office of Disability Services.
