Biography / Academic Interests
: Professor Affron co-chaired the Program Committee of the Annual Conference of the Society for Cinema Studies in 1981 and co-chaired (with George Custen) the Society for Cinema Studies Annual Conference in 1995. She has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Cinema Studies and as Associate Editor of Cinema Journal.
Professor Affron chaired the CSI Department of Performing and Creative Arts from 1977-1987. In 1987, she was appointed Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences and from 1994-2002 was Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the College of Staten Island. She is at present Director of the CSI Center for the Study of Staten Island and a member of the doctoral faculty in Theater of the CUNY Graduate Center.
Scholarships / Publications
: Mirella Affron has written extensively on French and Italian film. In 1985, she co-edited (with E. Rubinstein) a volume on Truffaut's Le Dernier Metro. She is a general editor of two Rutgers University Press series: Films in Print and Depth of Field: Rutgers Essays on Film and Visual Culture. Mirella Affron is the author (with Charles Affron) of Sets in Motion: Art Direction and Film Narrative (1995) for which she and her co-investigator were awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Interpretive Research/Projects Grant. At present she is at work on Best Years: Going to the Movies in 1945-1946 (under contract: Rutgers University Press) and on a history of the Metropolitan Opera (under contract: University of California Press).
