Biography / Academic Interests :
Rima Blair is an Assistant Professor of Psychology whose work concerns creating social contexts to nurture human relationships and build self-efficacy. As a community/clinical psychologist, she is committed to the creation of needed services for underserved populations. Professor Blair pioneered Mother as Person support groups on Staten Island and began the Psychology Department’s Mentoring Program, first in area high schools and then, with Professors Kuppersmith and Cumiskey at the SI Community Residential Center, NYS Office of Family and Children’s Services.

Rima Blair has practiced psychotherapy for 33 years in Greenwich Village. She did postdoctoral training in family therapy at the Children’s Reception Service of Maimonides Hospital, Brooklyn, at Bronx State Psychiatric Center and, with Dr. Salvador Minuchin,  at the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. She was a Clinical Supervisor for CUNY’s Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. She is very interested in helping students find internships that will further their educational and career goals.

Scholarships / Publications :
Professor Blair’s doctoral research looked at how residential choices were related to inclusive or exclusionary attitudes toward racial integration in housing. She created a video project to promote intergenerational communication between African American teens and European American elders in the community of Stapleton on Staten Island. The resulting documentary “The Video Connection shows teens conducting video interviews with lifelong Stapelton residents.

Professor Blair’s scholarship concerns community based creation of services, for example, a joint program with Staten Island’s Department of Probation in which undergraduates were trained to be co-leaders of multifamily counseling groups. Early in her career, she organized women colleagues to press for a Women’s Task Force in Division 27 (Society for Research and Action: Division of Community Psychology) of APA which she then chaired. She edited a special topics issue of the Journal of Community Psychology with Anne Mulvey and Ann D’Ercole entitled Women in the Community. She is interested in bringing people together in creative inexpensive ways to address human needs whether it be developing workshops to promote safer sex, a video program to defuse intergenerational conflict or through developing courses that give students opportunities to provide services and advocacy.
