Biography / Academic Interests :
Chris Verene earned his M.F.A. in Photography from Georgia State University in 1996.  Prior to coming to CSI, Verene directed the photography program at SUNY Westchester Community College, and was on faculty at the Photography, Video and Related Media MFA program at the School of Visual Arts. Verene's work is in numerous major museum collections, and in 2001, was the first photographer to receive a Pollock-Krasner Fellowship. Verene has been called a natural storyteller, focusing on the whole intimate truth of human narratives. His new book, "Family," accompanied a traveling solo exhibition throughout the United States and Europe from 2010 to 2013. Verene is also a musician, performing as a drummer with Cordero, a bilingual Spanish/English alternative rock group.  Verene is at work on a photography and video project called, “Home Movies,” about his family and their community in rural Illinois. His well-known performance art work entitled, “The Self-Esteem Salon,” was recently staged at Florida International University in 2015. ARTFORUM praised Verene as "depicting people with a combination of respect and clarity." Verene is represented by Postmasters Gallery in New York City.
