Biography / Academic Interests

Thomas Volscho is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. He received his Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. degrees in Sociology from the University of Connecticut. His dissertation linked the historical literature on sterilization abuse of women of color to contemporary statistical patterns in sterilization. He plans to turn several of his dissertation chapters into journal articles and the entire project into a book manuscript. As a graduate student he has published several articles on how institutions such as unions, minimum wages, and government employment influence the level of income inequality in states and cities. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the Sociology Department at the University of Connecticut. His future research includes conducting surveys, field experiments and interviews with physicians and reproductive healthcare recipients to study contemporary sterilization abuse. In a book-length project (tentatively titled The Revenge of the Capitalist Class) he is studying the rise of the super rich and their response to the 1960s “social crisis” in the form of increased repression and militarization of domestic society.
