Biography / Academic Interests
Ying Zhu is a leading scholar in Chinese cinema and media studies. Her publications have appeared in prominent film and media journals, edited book volumes, and websites/blogs in the US, China, and Europe. The recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies, she is the author and editor of seven books, including "Chinese Cinema during the Era of Reform: the Ingenuity of the System" (2003) and "Television in Post-Reform China: Serial Drama, Confucian Leadership and Global Television Market" (2008), "TV China" (co-edited with Chris Berry, 2009), and "Art, Politics and Commerce in Chinese Cinema" (co-edited with Stanley Rosen, 2010). Her first trade book on China Central Television, "Two Billion Eyes" is forthcoming via New Press. Her co-produced documentary, "Google China Standoff” was broadcasted on the Netherlands Public Television and is being distributed in the US, Europe and South America. She is currently working on a TV documentary about the revival of Confucius classics learning among the Chinese college youth. She co-curated “Centenary of Chinese Film Retrospective” at the Lincoln Centre in New York in 2005 and contributed major articles to the China Studies blog of "the New York Times."
