Biography / Academic Interests
Francisco Salgado-Robles received his Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Florida. At the graduate level, he also holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Romance Languages and Literatures with a concentration in Spanish Applied Linguistics from the University of Missouri, a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) English in Secondary Education from the Universidad de Extremadura (Spain), and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Bilingual Education from the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (Spain). Prior to his graduate studies, he obtained a licenciatura (B.A.) in English Philology from the Universidad de Sevilla (Spain).
He held a faculty position in Hispanic Studies at the University of Kentucky (UK) from 2011 until 2013 when he came to the College of Staten Island (CSI). At UK he taught Spanish Language and Linguistics, coordinated the Spanish Language Program, supervised the Foreign Language and International Economics (FLIE) program, and directed the service-learning program both at home (Lexington, KY) and abroad in Spanish-speaking countries. At CSI, Dr. Salgado-Robles teaches Spanish Language and Linguistics and oversees the undergraduate program in Foreign Language Education.
Scholarship / Publications
His research resides at the intersection of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Sociolinguistics. He primarily examines how second language (L2) learners acquire 'sociolinguistic competence' in different learning environments (e.g., classroom, study abroad, and service learning environments), i.e., the sensitivity to the context where language is used, including the sensitivity to differences in local geographical dialect, the sensitivity to differences in register, or, among others, the sensitivity to speaking in a native-like or natural way. This allows him to evaluate relationships between study setting, language use, and language gains.
Besides addressing issues related to the effects of the context in language learning, his scholarly and teaching interests span a continuum from the applied to the theoretical, from empirical research to teacher training. He is particularly interested in Foreign Language Pedagogy, Technology in Foreign Language Education, Bilingualism, and Language Variation.
Dr. Salgado-Robles has presented his research at national and international conferences. His work has been published in several specialized journals, including Revista Interlingüística, Revista de Humanidades, Relingüística Aplicada, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Boletín de Filología de la Universidad de Chile, and Revista de Estudios de Lingüística Aplicada.
