Biography / Academic Interests :
Professor Marianne Weil received her B.A. in sculpture from Goddard College in Vermont and M.F.A. in Sculpture from the School of Visual Arts, New York City, where she studied with Michael Singer, Mary Miss and Louise Bourgeois. She continued her sculpture training as an apprentice to foundry artisans and stone carvers in Pietrasanta, Italy. Prior to her appointment at the College of Staten Island, Professor Weil taught sculpture at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and was Visiting Professor at Haverford College where she taught metal casting and sculpture. At Haverford, she received several Mellon seed grants for collaborative sculpture projects with faculty from Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges in art history, anthropology and archeology.

Scholarships / Publications :
Professor Weil’s grants and awards include residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Hospitalfield Trust, Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant, Fondaçion Valparaiso Fellowship and  both a New York State Council for the Arts Community Connection Grant and Individual Artist Grant. She served as a Visiting Artist at the Casa de Mateus Foundation in Portugal and the Kirsten Kjærs Museum, Denmark.  In 2009 the Order of the Sisters of St. Dominic installed on the Village Green in Water Mill, New York her prize-winning bronze commission. She will have solo exhibitions in 2010 at Kouros Gallery in New York City and at the Keystone Arts and Culture Center in Lancaster, PA. Professor Weil retains active membership in the College Art Association, the American Association of University Women and the International Sculpture Center.

Publications featuring Professor Weil’s work include: Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, The NY Times, Geo Magazine, Sculptural Pursuit Magazine and The International Herald Tribune.  Professor Weil has exhibited her work in England, Denmark, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Her work appears in many public and private collections. Currently Kouros Gallery in New York City and Ridgefield, CT and Art Sites Gallery in Riverhead, New York represent Professor Weil’s work.
