Biography / Academic Interests :
A background in studio art has always informed Siona Wilson’s approach to teaching the history of art. In the classroom she emphasizes the sociality of artistic practice and this stems from having worked collaboratively with other artists. Art is made in dialogue with the surrounding culture and frequently this involves controversy, conflict, and opposition. Professor Wilson is also part of the Women’s Studies faculty and whether teaching a specialist modern art class or a broad survey, she aims to connect issues of gender and sexuality to other social institutions and structures of power. Professor Wilson teaches classes on Nineteenth-Century Art, Twentieth-Century art, American Art Since 1945, the History of Photography and survey classes on the History of Art until the Renaissance and the History of Art from the Renaissance. She also team teaches a class on Issues in Contemporary Photography with Beatrix Reinhardt, Assistant Professor of Photography.

Scholarships / Publications :
Siona Wilson’s recent publications include “From Women’s Work to the Umbilical Lens: Mary Kelly’s Early Work,” Art History, 31:1, February 2008, “The Destinations for Feminist Art: Past, Present, and Future” Women’s Studies Quarterly, 36:1/2, spring-summer 2008 and “White Metonymy: a Discussion around Jo Spence and Terry Dennett’s Colonization” that appeared in the tri-lingual exhibition catalogue for the 2005 Jo Spence retrospective at the Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona. She curated the exhibition Mother Cuts: Experiments in Film and Video, an international group exhibition featuring work by Mieke Bal, Mona Hatoum, Mary Kelly, and Sarah Pucill at the New Jersey City University Gallery in 2008. She is currently completing a book manuscript about 1970s feminist art and the question of the avant garde. Her essay “’Girls Say Yes to Boys Who Say No’: Four Contemporary Artists Refigure the Sex War on Terror” is forthcoming in Oxford Art Journal. She frequently gives conference papers and academic talks; most recently at the College Art Association conference in New York and Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico.
