Biography / Academic Interests
: Before taking a position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the College of Staten Island, Professor Morris worked four years as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri. His research interests include ethical theory, free will, applied ethics, the philosophy of biology, and moral psychology. In 2008 Stephen received a Distinguished Professor Award with special distinction in the area of Scholarship/Creative Activity from Missouri Western State University. Dr. Morris received Missouri Western State University’s James V. Mehl Outstanding Faculty Scholarship Award in 2009. During the summer of 2009, Professor Morris attended an NEH Institute in experimental philosophy held at the University of Utah.
Scholarships / Publications
: Dr. Morris has authored or co-authored several published articles, including “Tracing the Origins of Altruism: The Evolutionary Needle in a Haystack,” “Towards a More Empirically Informed Ethics,” and “Is Incompatibilism Intuitive?” His papers have appeared in top philosophy journals such as Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and Philosophy of Science. He has also presented a number of refereed papers at professional conferences, including “In Defense of the Hedonistic Account of Happiness,” at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Philosophical Association (Pacific Division), Vancouver, British Columbia, April 2009.
