Biography / Academic Interests :
A member of the PEP Department since 1998, Professor White teaches courses in the intersections of economics, philosophy, and law, including Law and Economics (ECO 331/POL 331), Economics and Philosophy (ECO 333/PHL 333), and Legal Philosophy (PHL 331/POL 330), in addition to other economics and philosophy courses. He is advisor to CSI’s chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international economic honor society, and organizes the PEP Department’s monthly Philosophy Forum (as of fall 2009). In his research, Professor White uses the philosophy of Immanuel Kant to enrich the ethical foundations of economics (in particular, the economic approach to law).

Scholarships / Publications :
Professor White is currently writing a book collecting and expanding on his work on Kantian ethics and economics, titled Autonomy, Dignity, and Character: Kantian Ethics and the Economic Individual (for Stanford University Press). His edited books include The Thief of Time: Philosophical Essays on Procrastination (with Chrisoula Andreou, forthcoming from Oxford University Press), Theoretical Foundations of Law and Economics (Cambridge University Press, 2009), Ethics and Economics: New Perspectives (with Irene van Staveren, forthcoming from Routledge), and Economics and the Mind (with CSI colleage Barbara Montero, Routledge, 2007). He has over 30 journal articles and book chapters in the intersections of economics, philosophy, and law, and is a frequent presenter at scholarly conferences.

Professor White is also an active editor and contributor to the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series (published by John Wiley & Sons), which introduces readers to basic concepts in philosophy using examples drawn from pop culture (movies, television, music, etc.). He has edited Watchmen and Philosophy: A Rorschach Test (2009) and Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul (with Robert Arp, 2008), and has contributed to other volumes in the series on South Park, Metallica, Family Guy, The Office, and the X-Men.
