Biography / Academic Interests
: Katharine Goodland teaches courses in Shakespeare, early English drama, Classical drama, and medieval and early modern culture. She has an abiding interest in the role of emotion, not only in the performance and reception of plays, but also in moral reasoning, critical thinking, and the artistic process. In addition to her academic work, she has participated in numerous performance workshops with Shakespeare and Company of Lenox, Massachusetts.
Scholarships / Publications
: Katharine Goodland’s essays on medieval and early modern English drama have appeared in several scholarly journals, among them: The Journal of Religion and the Arts, Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England, and Early Theatre. She has also contributed chapters to essay collections on drama and emotion in early modern Europe and England. She has written numerous reviews of Shakespeare productions in the New York Metropolitan area for Shakespeare Bulletin, and she is also on the board of that journal, which is published by Johns Hopkins University Press. She is presently the chair of the Columbia University Shakespeare Seminar. Her book, Female Mourning and Tragedy in Medieval and Renaissance English Drama was published by Ashgate in September, 2006, and she is currently completing a second book, co-edited with British scholar John O’Connor, entitled Shakespeare on Stage and Screen, 1970–2000, which is forthcoming from Palgrave.
