Biography / Academic Interests
: Mary Jeanette Moran received her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 2006. Her dissertation, “Telling Relationships: Feminist Narrative Ethics in the Nineteenth-Century British Novel,” examines works by Mary Hays, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Elizabeth Gaskell in order to demonstrate that the questions raised by modern-day feminist philosophers are encoded on a narrative level in novels of the Romantic and Victorian periods. An interest in the ethical power of narrative links Professor Moran’s work on nineteenth-century literature and her current focus on contemporary adolescent literature.
Scholarships / Publications
: Professor Moran presents papers on adolescent literature and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature at numerous regional and national conferences, including the annual meetings of the Modern Language Association, the Popular Culture Association, and the Children’s Literature Association. She has published a review of Louisa May Alcott’s The Inheritance in Southern Humanities Review and an essay entitled “Nancy’s Ancestors: The Mystery of Imaginative Female Power in The Secret Garden and A Little Princess” in the collection Secrets and Solutions: Critical Encounters with Mystery in Children’s Literature.
