Sassi is a historian of Revolutionary America and the early republic with particular interests in the intersection of religion, politics, and reform movements.  In 2001 Oxford University Press published his book, A Republic of Righteousness: The Public Christianity of the Post-Revolutionary New England Clergy, in its Religion in America series.  His subsequent research on the antislavery movement in eighteenth-century America has yielded articles in the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, Journal of Early Modern History, and Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography.  He has held short-term research fellowships at the American Antiquarian Society, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the David Library of the American Revolution.  Dr. Sassi’s current project explores the fifty-year struggle to achieve New Jersey’s gradual emancipation act of 1804.
