Biography / Academic Interests

Professor Sassi joined the CSI faculty in 1998. He teaches such courses as the survey of U.S. History to 1865, historical method, and the early American republic, among others. He also regularly teaches in the Ph.D. program in History at the CUNY Graduate Center, where he is a member of the faculty. In the profession, Dr. Sassi enjoys being an active member of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic.
From November 2002 through December 2004, Professor Sassi served at Acting Director of the Honors College at CSI, and he chaired the College’s General Education Committee from 2005-2008. He has been Chairperson of the Department of History since 2009.
Scholarship / Publications

Jonathan D. Sassi is a historian of Revolutionary America and the early republic with particular interests in the intersection of religion, politics, and reform movements. In 2001 Oxford University Press published his book, A Republic of Righteousness: The Public Christianity of the Post-Revolutionary New England Clergy, in its Religion in America series. His subsequent research on the antislavery movement in eighteenth-century America has yielded articles in the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, Journal of Early Modern History, and Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. He has held short-term research fellowships at the American Antiquarian Society, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the David Library of the American Revolution. Dr. Sassi’s current project explores the fifty-year struggle to achieve New Jersey’s gradual emancipation act of 1804.
