Biography / Academic Interests
:
A member of the PEP Department since 1998, Professor White teaches courses in the intersections of economics, philosophy, and law, including Law and Economics (ECO 331/POL 331), Economics and Philosophy (ECO 333/PHL 333), and Legal Philosophy (PHL 331/POL 330). In his research, Professor White primarily uses the philosophy of Immanuel Kant to enrich the ethical foundations of economics, practical decision-making, and policy.

Professor White is the author of Kantian Ethics and Ecconomics: Autonomy, Dignity, and Character (Stanford University Press, 2011). His most recent edited books include Retributivism: Essays on Theory and Policy (Oxford University Press, 2011), The Thief of Time: Philosophical Essays on Procrastination (with Chrisoula Andreou, Oxford University Press, 2010), Ethics and Economics: New Perspectives (with Irene van Staveren, Routledge, 2010), and Theoretical Foundations of Law and Economics (Cambridge University Press, 2009). He has over 30 journal articles and book chapters in the intersections of economics, philosophy, and law, is a frequent presenter at scholarly conferences, and blogs at Economics and Ethics (which he co-founded) and Psychology Today.
Professor White is also an active editor and contributor to the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series (published by John Wiley & Sons), which introduces readers to basic concepts in philosophy using examples drawn from pop culture (movies, television, music, etc.). He has edited or co-edited volumes focusing on Batman, Watchmen, Iron Man, Green Lantern, and the Avengers, and has contributed to other volumes in the series on South Park, Metallica, Family Guy, The Office, the X-Men, Spider-Man, The Big Bang Theory, and Alice in Wonderland.
