Biography / Academic Interests :
Chapman Wing’s main interest is in French literature of “the long 19th century” (roughly 1789-1914), and especially representations of the distant future before the advent of science fiction.  His current book project, tentatively titled The Future Looks Backward, studies the ways in which French authors such as Louis-Sébastien Mercier, Stendhal, Theóphile Gautier, and Jules Verne imagined history through the lens of future centuries, as a way to understand the implications of modernity, obsolescence, and cultural meaning on the long-term scale.  His other interests include theater, literary theory, postcolonial theory, gender studies, and film studies.
