Biography / Academic Interests :
Professor Fata has been researching breast cancer for more than 15 years and it has been a frustrating passion as there are still many unresolved questions about this disease. He tends to approach this area of research at an angle that investigates the normal biology of the mammary gland. By researching the signals needed for this tissue to form a branched ductal network during development, to synthesize large amounts of milk during lactation, and to undergo massive tissue turnover and cell death during involution, Professor Fata believes we begin to better understand the very signals that invariably become deregulated during breast cancer. His model of choice has often been the mouse mammary gland, which has allowed him to combine in vivo studies with organotypic 3-dimensional cell culture assays. Microscopic and macroscopic imaging is an important tool in his research and the College of Staten Island is well equipped with state of the art imaging equipment. Dr. Fata is also a Faculty member of the City University of New York (CUNY) Biochemistry and Biology Doctoral Programs. If you are interested in joining Dr. Fata’s lab and possess a passion for the sciences and the willingness to work hard toward your goals please contact him.
