Biography / Academic Interests :
Genetic toxicology using microbial systems
Environmental Health
Pathogenicity mechanisms in microorganisms

Elena McCoy’s academic interests include program development in the areas of science education including the health sciences and laboratory research concerned with the metabolism and biological activity of environmental agents.  She is currently a member of the CUNY doctoral faculty in EEB and the Environmental Science center of the College of Staten Island.  Professor McCoy serves as a Biology representative to the Teacher Academy and directs the Biology Medical Technology program. Currently she advises three graduate students, two undergraduates and one high school student in laboratory research.  The projects include studies on biological activity of environmental chemicals, particularly the plasticizer endocrine-disruptors, in a yeast system.  Their studies also include investigations on the antioxidant effects of isoflavones and the trihydroxystilbene, resveratrol.
