Macaulay Honors College
Aleksandra Makowska, Psychology Major
The Macaulay Opportunities Fund has allowed Aleksandra Makowska to participate in international service learning. She took her first trip as an ambassador for the Sister Island Project to the Dominican Republic. Throughout January 2012, Aleksandra lived in Cruz Verde, a small village in central Dominican Republic with little resources. There, she and another volunteer led workshops on dental hygiene and yoga for the members of the community.
The success of her first service learning trip inspired Aleksandra to become involved in the Macaulay Medical Brigades Club. The club fund raised for, organized, and completed a medical brigade to rural Panama in the summer of 2012. The team of about 40 Macaulay students set up mobile health clinics and administered medical services to under-serviced areas of Panama, reaching over 400 patients throughout four clinical days. The hands-on experience and knowledge she gained reinforced Aleksandra's goals of working in the medical field and continuing to visit new countries through service learning projects.
