Office of Academic Support
Bob Brandt, Tutoring Coordinator
The Writing Center, under the direction of the English Department, offers tutoring to students at all levels and in all subject areas, with a primary focus on writing and reading skills. Our basic approach is to help students improve their skills by providing them with meaningful feedback and guidance. We are here to help each student thoroughly fulfill his or her own potential through a better understanding of course requirements, assignments and readings.
To meet our goals, we offer several modes of tutoring. Students with regularly scheduled appointments meet for one class period (50 minutes) a week with a designated tutor, sometimes one-on-one and sometimes in small groups that include up to three other students in the same class or at the same level. Drop-in tutoring requires no appointment. Tutors are available during drop-in hours to assist students with immediate concerns regarding a specific assignment.
The Writing Center also offers the following:
- Conversation groups for ESL students
- Tutorial workshops for students who have completed all available developmental courses but require further assistance to pass their writing and/or reading skills tests
- Miscellaneous study groups and workshops (on a semester-by-semester basis) based on the needs and interests of the students
Our hours vary slightly from semester to semester. If you wish to receive our current schedule, to file an application for regularly scheduled weekly tutoring or to simply find out more about the Writing Center, either visit us in 2S-216 or call us at 982-3635.
