 Testing

In addition to the Assessment Tests, departmental placement tests may be required for students entering specific majors and/or programs. For example: The Biology Placement Examination is required of all students entering Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Physician Assistant, and Physical Therapy programs. The test covers material taught in most high school biology courses.

The Modern Language Tests in Spanish, French, or Italian are administered by the Department of Modern Languages. Students who want to continue with the same language they already studied (in high school or another college) need to be tested in that language for purposes of placement or exemption. Additional information is available by calling (718) 982-3711.

Career/Vocational Testing Program

The College Testing Office administers a number of career/vocational tests to CSI students seeking to clarify their career goals and/or college majors. Among the tests that can assist students in choosing their careers or college majors are: Kuder, Hall Occupational Inventory, California Personality Inventory, Brown-Holtzman, etc. Students should approach the staff of the Career Development Office, South Administration Building 1A - Room 109 (718) 982-2391 if they wish to be tested in this domain. The career/vocational tests are available free of charge to students registered at the College of Staten Island.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College of Staten Island administers the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Students may be awarded college credits if the test scores are sufficiently high. Since the tests are administered at CSI for students attending any college, it is important to note that each college has its own policy of awarding credits; consequently, students should check with the college from which they expect to receive college credits to determine what the credit granting policy is with regard to the CLEP examination. The same applies to the CSI students since not all academic departments award credits for CLEP examinations (the College Testing Office has the relevant information; please consult before signing up to take a CLEP examination).

The CLEP exams are given three times each month, the second Saturday (beginning at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.) and the last Wednesday (beginning at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.). Fees are $70 per test (payable by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) or check/money order to CLEP should accompany the application as soon as possible to reserve a seat) and a non-refundable service fee $15, per test (money order only), proctoring fee is charged to all students; CSI students should also take the writing portion of the Freshman College Composition examination with an additional $15 fee. Applications and information about the CLEP examinations are available from the CSI College Testing Office (718 - 982 - 2380) and at www.collegeboard.com.
