The Writing Center
Basic Services and Goals
The Writing Center, under the direction of the English Department, offers tutoring to at all levels and in all subject areas, with a primary on writing and reading skills. Our basic approach is to students improve their skills by providing them with meaningful and guidance. We are not here to do anyone's work, but to help each student thoroughly fulfill his or her potential through a better understanding of course requirements, and readings.
Primary Modes of Tutoring
To meet our goals, we offer several modes of tutoring.
Students with regularly scheduled appointments meet for one class period (50 minutes) a week with a designated tutor, sometimes one-on-one, and sometimes in small group that includes up to three other students in the same class or at the same level.
Drop-in tutoring requires no appointment. Tutors are available during drop-in hours to assist students with temporary or immediate concerns regarding a specific assignment.
Other Services Offered
- Conversation groups for ESL students
- Tutorial workshops for students who have completed all available developmental courses but require further assistance to pass their writing and/or reading assessment tests
- Miscellaneous study groups and workshops (on a semester-by-semester basis) based on the needs and interests of the students
