Verrazano Freshman Orientation – Class of 2019

Date: Monday, June 29th
Time: 8:30 am-5:00 pm
Meeting Location: Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Atrium

Save the date for the mandatory Verrazano Freshman Orientation that will take place on Monday, June 29th!  This orientation session is open only to incoming freshmen who have been accepted to The Verrazano School at CSI and accepted their seat in the Verrazano Class of 2019, and all incoming Verrazano freshmen are required to attend.  Orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude by 5:00 p.m., and lunch will be provided. You must bring a photo ID (driver’s license, or high school ID), completed waivers for CSI and Project U.S.E. (see below), and a pen or pencil to orientation.

At the Verrazano Freshman Orientation, you’ll learn more about what it means to be a Verrazano student and what to expect as you begin this new phase of your academic life.  You will be introduced to various campus resources, including the Library and the technology that will be used as a CSI student, and the student orientation leaders will help guide students throughout the day.

As a special component of the Verrazano Freshman Orientation, students will participate in activities facilitated by an experiential education organization called Project U.S.E. based out of New Jersey.  Project U.S.E. has been providing unique, experiential learning experiences for groups for over 40 years, and its learning philosophy is based on the belief that experiential learning can be the catalyst for not only individual growth but also community growth.  Verrazano students will be participating in fun teambuilding activities together on the CSI campus that will help them get to know their Verrazano peers and provide skills to help them navigate their first year of college.

Important Information about the Project U.S.E. component:

Project U.S.E. leaders will facilitate the teambuilding activities as part of the Verrazano Freshman Orientation on June 29th.  When you read the waiver from Project U.S.E. it may sound like we’ll be going to the site in New Jersey and participating in some of the more complex activities.  However, this is not the case.  The Verrazano New Student Orientation will not include hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, rappelling, high challenge courses, map and compass land navigation, canoeing, basic outdoor living skills, or basic survival skills.  Our event will be held on the CSI campus and will include teambuilding, group games and low challenge course exercises.

You must sign and return the two waiver forms (one from Project U.S.E. and one from CSI) in order to participate in the Verrazano Freshman Orientation.  If you are over the age of 18, the forms require only your signature.  If you are under the age of 18 you will need the signature of a parent or guardian on each form.  The CSI Release Form must be notarized when it is signed, and there is a Notary available at most banks.

The two waiver forms must be returned to the Verrazano office no later than May 1st.

CSI ID Cards

Please come to campus between June 10th and June 24th to have your photo taken for your CSI ID card.  After you have submitted the required documents to The Verrazano School, your name will be on a list at the Parking Services Office (Building 3A-Room 106), and you will need to bring a photo ID and inform the staff member that you are an incoming Verrazano Honors student.

IDs will be distributed on June 29th at the Verrazano Freshman Orientation to all students who had their photos taken before June 24th.  If you do not come to have your photo taken by June 25th you will not receive your CSI ID at the Verrazano Freshman Orientation.

Please visit the Parking Services website for detailed information about the summer office hours.

If you will be arriving by public transportation, the College Loop Bus, which runs from the main gate, will take you to the stop closest to the Center for the Arts. If you will be driving, you must stop at the front gate and pick up a parking pass for the day.  You can write Verrazano Freshman Orientation on the form where it asks for your location.  If you will be dropped off, use the driveway in front of the Center for the Arts (Building 1P). You will be inside and outside over the course of the day, so please dress comfortably.
