SUMMARY:Vagrancy in Motion: Shifting from Novelty to Ecological Importance
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nFor the past century\, however\, the prevailing
idea that vagrants are\naberrant has left vagrancy largely unexplored and
understudied.\nInstead\, a number of conflicting theories have been propo
sed to\nexplain how vagrancy occurs\, with no clear consensus\, and insuff
icient\nevidence to support them. Additionally\, lack of direct studies on
\nvagrants limits what we can reveal about mechanisms of vagrancy\,\nleavi
ng major gaps in our understanding of this behavior.\n\nDr. Lucinda Zawadz
ki has been studying vagrancy since 2014 in an\neffort to shift the conver
sation on vagrancy from one of novelty and\naberrance\, to one of ecologic
al importance. This talk will explore the\ncontributions that Dr. Zawadzki
and her colleagues have made to the\nfield\, highlighting those that seek
to improve our understanding of\nvagrancy from both a mechanistic and beh
avioral perspective. Through\nan array of techniques\, from computational
modelling\, to field\nexperimentation\, and stable isotope analysis\, resu
lts of this work\nchallenge the idea that vagrants are aberrant\, and inst
ead suggests\nvagrancy is an expected behavior tied to reproductive succes
s and\ndirected exploratory movements. That is\, vagrancy may not be\n“v
agrancy” at all\, but simply movement to be expected within a\nnormal li
fe cycle. Efforts to understand vagrancy are timely as we\nseek to quantif
y the extent of species’ ranges and understand how\nspecies will respond
and adapt when faced with severe climatic and\nanthropomorphic change.\n

SUMMARY:DECONVersation: Single-Cell Foundation Model-Derived Embeddings for
\nRobust Cell Type Deconvolution of Bulk RNA-seq Data
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nUnderstanding the composition of the tumor micr
oenvironment is\ncritical for cancer research\, as a single biopsy contain
 s a complex\nmixture of malignant cells\, immune cells\, and structural ti
ssues. To\nestimate these cell-type proportions from standard bulk RNA seq
uencing\ndata\, researchers use a process called deconvolution. This\ncomp
utational technique effectively unmixed the genetic signal to\ninfer the a
bundance of each cell type. However\, traditional approaches\nare often hi
ndered by technical noise\, significant inter-patient\nvariability\, and b
iases introduced by manually selecting and weighting\nmarker genes.\nHere\
, we introduce DECONVersation\, which leverages advanced\nsingle-cell foun
dation models such as Geneformer and Cell2Sentence to\naddress these chall
enges. By utilizing AI-derived embeddings\, this\nmethod captures complex
gene relationships while reducing the impact\nof experimental noise that t
ypically confounds traditional\ndeconvolution tools. It also removes the n
eed for manual curation of\ngene lists. Benchmarking against established m
ethods such as MuSiC and\nBayesPrism demonstrates that this AI-based appro
ach achieves\ncomparable or superior accuracy across diverse datasets. Not
ably\, the\nmodels generalize well to tissues not included in pre-training
 .\nFurthermore\, we show that tissue-specific fine-tuning can further\nimp
rove performance.\n\nAs the field continues to evaluate the utility of lar
ge-scale AI\nmodels in biology\, deconvolution can serve as a valuable ben
chmarking\ntask that captures both gene network learning and batch integra
 tion.\n

SUMMARY:From Structure\, Dynamics\, and Assembly of Human Antimicrobial Pro
 teins\nto Functions: A Chemist’s Perspective
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nAbstract: Antimicrobial proteins in humans sequ
ester zinc to curtail\ninfection. Although well established as key compone
nts of the immune\nresponse\, the mechanisms of action of these proteins\,
such as S100A12\,\nin the inflammatory pathway are not well understood. I
n this talk\, I\nwill present our work on biophysical characterization of
S100A12 using\nNMR spectroscopy\, together with cellular studies evaluatin
g the origin\nof inflammatory signals triggered by the protein. In particu
lar\, I\nwill focus on the roles of Ca(II) and Zn(II) toward modulating th
e\nstructure and internal dynamics of S100A12 that afford its biological\n
functions.\nBased on our studies\, we propose a generalized model describi
ng the\nmolecular events that enable S100A12 and related antimicrobial\npr
oteins to regulate infection and inflammation during immune\nresponse.\n

SUMMARY:From individuals to ecosystems: the importance of subcellular metal
\ndistributions to toxicity and trophic transfer in metal-impacted\nmarine
  benthic communities
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nIn some cases\, however\, internal sequestratio
 n of metals via\nmetal-binding proteins and/or metal-rich concretions (bot
h involved in\ndetoxification) may confer increased tolerance or resistanc
 e. Prof.\nWallace has demonstrated that the subcellular storage of metal w
ithin\nprey plays a key role in controlling metal trophic transfer: metals
\nbound to proteins and organelles are highly available to predators\nupon
ingestion\, whereas metals stored in concretions have much reduced\navail
ability.\n\nBecause subcellular metal storage can be species- and\npopulat
 ion-dependent\, the composition of metal-impacted benthic\ncommunities may
influence the bioavailability and trophic transfer of\nmetals to predator
 s. Communities dominated by species or populations\nrelying on detoxificat
ion via metal-binding proteins may enhance\ntrophic transfer\, while those
storing metals primarily in metal-rich\nconcretions (similar to kidney st
ones) may reduce food-chain transfer.\nThese metal-handling strategies hav
e consequences at both the\nindividual level (tolerance vs toxicity\, alte
red metabolism\, behavior\,\nand growth) and the population level (persist
 ence\, reduced abundance\,\nor absence from impacted environments).\n\nAs
a result\, community composition of marine benthic systems—shaped\nby sp
 ecies- and population-specific metal-handling strategies—has\nthe potent
ial to influence ecosystems by controlling metal trophic\ntransfer from pr
ey to predator. Although prey-dependent processes are\ncentral to this con
 trol\, predator-dependent factors such as digestive\nstrategies may also c
ontribute. Professor Wallace and the Wallace\nResearch Group have explored
the ecological importance of subcellular\nmetal distribution and trophic
transfer since ~1999. This talk will\nreview these studies\, along with re
lated work by other researchers who\nhave applied the methods and approach
es developed by Professor Wallace\nand his students.\n\nTHis is a CLUE eve
 nt.\n

CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nWSIA-FM is Staten Island’s very own\, and onl
y FM radio station.\nWSIA-FM allows students to connect with people in the
community and\nall over the world via the radio and our Web stream.\n\nIn
order to become a member\, students must complete four workshops\, an\nen
 trance exam\, four sit-ins with seasoned DJ’s\, and a demo:\n\nWSIA’s
first workshop reviews the history of the station going back\n43 years and
the expectations that the station has of members.\nAfterward\, we go into
detail about our seven departments and what they\ndo\, for example Person
nel is recruitment\, Music is responsible for the\nmusic that is played on
  our airways\, etc. Lastly\, we go over our\ngeneral rules\, bylaws\, visi
tor policies\, and how to make your time\nwith WSIA a success.(You must at
tend this workshop first before you\ncan attend the other 3 workshops).\nW
orkshop 2: (You must attend the first workshop to attend the second.)\nAft
er WSIA’s first workshop\, this second workshop goes into more\ndetails
of the station’s rules such as the FCC guidelines\, the dos\nand don’t
 s on-air (during your three-hour on-air show)\, our public\nfile\, how we
track music\, how to avoid payola and plugola\, and many\nmore important t
hings that will prepare a student to take on the\nresponsibility of being
a member at WSIA. Workshop 3: (You must attend\nthe first and the second w
orkshop in order to attend the third) The\nthird workshop moves away from
talking about rules and regulations of\nthe station and focuses on the Dai
ly Operating Log. The Log is a legal\ndocument that WSIA members use durin
g their shows. The FCC can use\nthese documents to track what we are doing
and to make sure that we\nare operating within parameters. This workshop
is a review of how the\nLog is supposed to be filled out because if we mak
e errors or mistakes\non this legal document\, we could face fines or loss

SUMMARY:Future-Proofing the Brain\, the Naked Mole-Rat Way
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nLiving their entire lives in crowded\, undergro
und burrows with low\noxygen and chronically elevated carbon dioxide (CO
₂)\, they not only\ntolerate these conditions but actively prefer them.
This talk explores\nhow naked mole-rats have evolved remarkable neural ada
ptations that\nallow their brains to remain stable in environments that wo
uld disrupt\nor damage the nervous systems of most mammals.\n\nFocusing on
inhibitory brain signaling\, the presentation will examine\nhow chronic h
ypercapnia alters GABAergic function through pH-sensitive\nmechanisms\, in
cluding the chloride transporter KCC2. Naked mole-rats\nexpress a rare KCC
2 variant that has been linked to autism\, epilepsy\,\nand schizophrenia i
n humans. Yet they maintain neural stability\nthrough a combination of gen
etic variation\, physiological buffering\,\nand social mechanisms. These f
indings provide insight into how brains\nadapt to elevated CO₂\, which i
s increasingly important as\natmospheric CO₂ levels rise with climate ch
 ange and human social\ndensity.\n

SUMMARY:“From individuals to ecosystems: the importance of subcellular me
tal\ndistributions to toxicity and trophic transfer in metal-impacted\nmar
 ine benthic communities”
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Description \n\nThe subcellular metal distribution of soft-bodi
ed invertebrates\n(clams\, shrimp\, worms) has been studied extensively\,
and linkages\nbetween inappropriate internal binding (i.e.\, to enzymes an
d\norganelles) and toxicity are well established. In some cases\, however\
,\ninternal sequestration of metals via metal-binding proteins and/or\nmet
al-rich concretions (both involved in detoxification) may confer\nincrease
d tolerance or resistance. Prof. Wallace has demonstrated that\nthe subcel
lular storage of metal within prey plays a key role in\ncontrolling metal
trophic transfer: metals bound to proteins and\norganelles are highly avai
lable to predators upon ingestion\, whereas\nmetals stored in concretions
have much reduced availability.\n\nBecause subcellular metal storage can b
 e species- and\npopulation-dependent\, the composition of metal-impacted b
enthic\ncommunities may influence the bioavailability and trophic transfer
of\nmetals to predators. Communities dominated by species or populations\
nrelying on detoxification via metal-binding proteins may enhance\ntrophic
transfer\, while those storing metals primarily in metal-rich\nconcretion
s (similar to kidney stones) may reduce food-chain transfer.\nThese metal-
handling strategies have consequences at both the\nindividual level (toler
ance vs toxicity\, altered metabolism\, behavior\,\nand growth) and the po
pulation level (persistence\, reduced abundance\,\nor absence from impacte
 d environments).\n\nAs a result\, community composition of marine benthic
 systems—shaped\nby species- and population-specific metal-handling strat
egies—has\nthe potential to influence ecosystems by controlling metal tr
ophic\ntransfer from prey to predator. Although prey-dependent processes a
re\ncentral to this control\, predator-dependent factors such as digestive
\nstrategies may also contribute. Professor Wallace and the Wallace\nResea
rch Group have explored the ecological importance of subcellular\nmetal di
stribution and trophic transfer since ~1999. This talk will\nreview these
studies\, along with related work by other researchers who\nhave applied t
he methods and approaches developed by Professor Wallace\nand his students
