Overview

This program is operated on the basis of reciprocal exchange and is open to CSI students only. This exchange aims to provide CSI students with a core of knowledge and skills in the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences while enabling them to experience life in in the exciting and dynamic city of Hong Kong, at the same tuition cost as a semester at CSI. In addition, CSI exchange students will serve as “CSI Student Ambassadors” and will gain a global perspective that helps them to achieve career goals in an increasingly interdependent world. City University of Hong Kong (CityU), situated in the heart of Kowloon Peninsula at a key transportation and shopping hub, is the host university for this exchange.  Hong Kong is a rich and diverse city that provides a wonderful setting to explore Chinese culture and tradition, in a remarkably modern and sophisticated global and Asian metropolis.

Studying 

Courses are available in the following disciplines in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) —Applied Social Studies (Social Work, Applied Sociology, Criminology, and Psychology), Asian & International Studies, Chinese, Translation & Linguistics (Chinese, Cultural & Heritage Management, Language Studies, Linguistics & Language Technology, and Translation & Interpretation), English, Media & Communication, and Public & Social Administration (Administration & Public Management, Environmental Policy Studies, and Policy Studies & Administration). Students may take up to 50% of their courses in a wide range of other disciplines by taking courses in other CityU colleges outside CLASS. Students normally take four 3 credit courses for a total of 12 credits.

CSI students should only choose courses offered by the seven departments under CLASS.  Students who wish to take courses that are offered by other CityU Colleges/Schools may do so, subject to special approval from the respective unit, AND as long as at least 50% of their course load is within CLASS (i.e. any courses offered by the seven departments under CLASS).  In other words, if a student takes the recommended 12 credit unit course load during the semester, a minimum of 2 courses (or 6 credit units) should be courses under CLASS.  Students then may take the other 2 courses (or 6 credit units) of their course load in other CityU Colleges/Schools subject to approval.

Living

Student Accommodation
Owing to the acute shortage of hall places, the application for on-campus student residence for Inbound Exchange students is limited.  Accommodation options for Inbound Exchange students include staying in commercially operated accommodations recommended by CityU, or renting their own flat on the market.  Rental costs depend on type of housing and location.  For more information regarding off-campus accommodation options, please visit the Student Residence Office (SRO) at https://www.cityu.edu.hk/sro/oca/ .  The SRO can provide assistance to students in seeking off-campus accommodation.  

There is no meal plan at CityU, even if for students who may live on campus.  Students can take meals at student canteens on campus.  

Exploring

Hong Kong, known as “the Pearl of the Orient”, is situated on the southeastern coast of China. Hong Kong is a fast paced cosmopolitan city with over seven million people where a western life-style mingles with ancient Chinese culture and old traditions co-exist with the new.  Victoria Harbor, separating the glass towers of Hong Kong Island and the busy streets of Kowloon, is one of the world’s most spectacular waterways. Beyond the commercial district of Kowloon are beautiful island sand beaches and Buddhist temples to explore.

There is also a Buddies Club that you can join at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.  It is a great way to meet local students and to have fun and form friendships, in addition to learning language and culture.  See more about the club and its many activities here.

Eligibility

The program is open to CSI students only, who have completed a minimum of 24 credits at the time of application, who are in good academic and student standing at CSI, with a minimum 2.75 GPA.   These exchange programs require a certain level of maturity, independence, seriousness of purpose, and an ability to adapt to new environmental and academic conditions, and therefore require an in-person campus interview.

Costs:  Students will be required to pay CSI full-time tuition prior to departure for the program. No additional tuition is charged by CityU.

Chinese Culture and Business at Shanghai University in China

Overview

Come explore China in Shanghai!  In Shanghai, the largest city and the financial/commercial capital of China, students can study at Shanghai University (SHU), a municipal university serving more than 40,000 Chinese students, and host to about 3,000 international students each year.  Students can study at SHU on a one-month summer session, or on a fall or spring semester program, with an option to stay for a second semester.  Semester students may take Mandarin beginning and intermediate courses, in addition to business courses taught in English including Asian Economics, E-Commerce, Marketing Strategy, and Finance. No knowledge of Chinese language is required. Students enjoy a significant cultural component and a rich out of class field trip program with many excursions to places of cultural and historic importance in Shanghai, a city of more than 27 million, in addition to out of town field trips to scenic and historic locations such as Suzhou and Hangzhou.

Semester Academic Options

The program is offered by the Faculty of the Institute of Economics, The Institute of Foreign Languages, and the College of International Exchange at Shanghai University.  It covers major economic, social, cultural and political aspects of China and the curriculum includes Chinese language study and Chinese culture.

Students participating in the semester program at Shanghai University must take a Chinese language course (6 US credits) and two or three other courses (3 US credits each) for a semester total of either 12 or 15 US credits.  NOTE: Students who are fluent in Mandarin Chinese do not take Chinese Language and may choose four or five three-credit lecture courses and take a total of either 12 or 15 US credits.

  • All students take one Chinese language course
  • All students then choose to take two or three of lecture courses (taught in English) below for Fall 2021 for a total of 12 - 15 semester credits.

Please note that there may be changes to the course offering.  Not all courses are offered each term.  All regular SHU courses offered to Chinese university students are not open to students in this program.

The semester program also includes company visits. Students acquire invaluable insight into the regional business environment and practices through a customized selection of company visits. Company partners include renowned global players among the Fortune Global 500 including Coca Cola, famous Chinese companies such as Bao Steel Group Corporation, China’s most competitive iron and steel enterprise, and Volkswagen Group China, the largest, most successful, and first Joint Venture enterprise in China’s automotive industry.

China’s rapid growth and its integration into the world economy has created opportunities for international businesses but it has also challenged businesses to adjust their way of doing business in China. To thrive in China, businesses must understand the changing and complex market environment, China’s national and local policies, in addition to Chinese language and culture. This program is designed to provide students with a multi-dimensional understanding of doing business in China. This well-tailored, multi-disciplinary program focuses on all specific areas relevant to doing business in China. The program aims to equip students with systematic knowledge of business practices, with a background of both the theories and up-to-date practical applications that are in use, and the ability to analyze changes in government policies and regulations that effect business operations in China.

Summer Program Academics

The summer program runs for four weeks and students earn 4 credits in Mandarin Chinese & Chinese Culture.

Course offerings:

  • Chinese Language instruction at the beginning level. Intermediate Chinese language levels and higher may be opened based on minimum enrollments.
  • Spoken Chinese & Conversation Classroom Teaching – 48 hours. Delivered by leading Chinese language teachers in the College of International Exchange at Shanghai University.
  • Chinese Language Communication & Techniques Out of classroom Practice – 6 hours. Accompanied by Chinese students in groups

In addition, 20 hours of lectures address two broad topics: Chinese Culture in the Context of Globalization and Cross Cultural Exchange: China’s Open Door – Open Shanghai.

The lectures include:

  • Chinese Art
  • Urban Development in Shanghai and the Choice of Career among Young People Culture
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture
  • Confucianism and Chinese Culture
  • The Public Space in Modern City : From the Perspective of the Square Dancing
  • Chinese Fan Painting
  • Chinese Food Tasting

Faculty for these lectures include senior professors at the College of International Exchange and the Center for Global Studies at Shanghai University.

Living

SUMMER:  Accommodation is in on-campus student dormitories and is included in the program cost.  Double and/or single room accommodation may be available, but this will be confirmed in the lead up to each session as dormitory renovation is occurring at the host university.  Dorm rooms are equipped with an air conditioner, heater, and desk and lamp for studying.  Students eat meals in on campus student cafeterias and off campus at nearby cafes. 

SEMESTER:  Accommodation may be in on-campus student dormitories or in off-campus dorm-apartment style housing and is included in the program cost.  Double and/or single room accommodation may be available, but this will be confirmed in the lead up to each session as dormitory renovation is occurring at the host university.  Students eat meals in on campus student cafeterias and off campus at nearby cafes.

Exploring

Shanghai University faculty or staff lead excursions as part of the program. Sample sites visited include the Yu Yuan Garden, the Jade Buddha Temple, the Shanghai Museum, a Pu Jiang River tour, and an acrobatics show. Other field trips may include a visit to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the Pearl Orient Tower in Pu Dong, or the Shenyang Lu Bargaining Market. Sample scenic trips include a two-day trip to Suzhou and Hangzhou.

During the summer program, there is an active out-of-class component that puts students in touch with contemporary Chinese culture and society and allows a lot of interaction with the Chinese people. There are Visits and Field Trips to the Shanghai Museum, the Museum of Chinese Martial Arts, the Shanghai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Folk Culture Museum, the Confucius Temple in Jiading District, and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Also included is a visit to the highest structure in East Asia – the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and the district of Lujiazui. Students enjoy a Huangpu River Cruise, a tour of the beautiful and historic Yu Garden in the heart of the old city, and a fascinating chance to see a daring Acrobatic Show. Field trips to learn about business in contemporary China include a visit to the Bao Steel Corporation and to a large Coca Cola facility. Field trips also lead students to explore the artistic and historic communities in the exciting areas of Tianzifang and Xintiandi. “Field Investigations” which are Out-Of-Town Field Trips enable students to learn about the traditional culture in the area south of the Yangtze River in the ancient town of Zhujiajiao. Students also see the many beautiful and historic gardens and sites of the two most famous and scenic cities in China, Suzhou and Hangzhou, which are said to be China’s Heaven on Earth”. “Exchange and Experience” activities enable students the opportunity to meet and interact with Chinese students and Chinese people. These activities include: Two Cross Culture Exchange Meetings, Cross cultural exchange activity in Daning International Community, and a visit to a school for disabled students in Zhabei District.
