Get your own story started with some interesting facts and anecdotes about the places that could be your next study abroad destination.

Students can choose one of these cities to study abroad:

  • Barcelona
  • Soria
  • Santander
  • Seville

Overview

Soria, a province with a great literary tradition, a cradle of renowned poets, playwrights, and storytellers and the scene of great works of universal literature, will serve as the backdrop for this wonderful summer program: Literature, History, Art and Culture in Soria, Spain.  During this 3-week program, students will study renowned works of literature set in Soria such as the Castilian epic Cantar de Mío Cid and El cerco de Numancia (The siege of Numancia), a Renaissance tragedy written around 1585 by Miguel de Cervantes. Other works that may be utilized in the course include those by the Romantic poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer who was the first author who dared to give literary form to the rich and legendary substrate of Soria with his Leyendas Sorianas and Sevillian poet Antonio Machado, a member of the Generation of ´98 who wrote Campos de Castilla. Other remarkable works include the many books of poems dedicated to the capital of the province by Gerardo Diego, an important member of the Generation of ´27.

Studying in Soria will give students the opportunity to more deeply understand the literature by immersing them in the vibrant and rich cultural and historical milieu that still exists today while exploring the past through these important works. The program takes full advantage of the location with visits to Numancia – an ancient Celtiberian settlement whose remains are located 7 km north of the city of Soria and other historical sites. As such, Soria is the ideal place to capture the essence of these works as well as to learn about the history, art, literature and other aspects of Spanish civilization.

This program will be based at the Centro Internacional Antonio Machado (CIAM) which was created in 2013 and brings together the experience of the Duques de Soria Foundation to organize courses, seminars and academic activities on Spanish language and culture. CIAM collaborates with outstanding academic and research institutions, such as the Cervantes Institute, the Spanish Royal Academy of Language, and the Universities of Salamanca, Valladolid and Complutense of Madrid as well as several partners in the United States. CIAM will serve as the administrative site for the program arranging for classroom space, housing, excursions, as well as providing logistical and academic support as needed.

Overview

Santander, the capital of the Cantabria region in northern Spain, serves as your host city for the summer.  With three miles of beach, this city of nearly 200,000 residents offers exciting cultural opportunities, interesting local art, and plenty of excursions. It is also close to the world-famous Altamira Caves, the Basque country, and the south of France while both Madrid and Barcelona are easily accessible via trains or buses. Luckily for you Santander is off the typical tourist list.  While known for its natural beauty, the food is pretty fantastic too.  You’ll find that the city overflows with tapas bars bursting with the region’s most exquisite flavors. But back to those beaches you can sneak off to between study sessions.  The Cantabria coast is sprinkled with some of the finest sand in Spain and the beaches take the main stage for summertime.

Academic programs include Spanish honors, humanities and social sciences, business, art and art history and internship offerings.

To complete the course curriculum, IAU hosts a plethora of guest speakers and lecturers from a wide breadth of disciplines including journalists, musicians, and political activists. Students who participate in this program will develop a deeper understanding of the Spanish language and its relationship to Catalan history and culture. Full of masterpieces by the famous artists Salvador Dalí and Antoni Gaudi, the city is a classroom in and of itself, exposing students to Modernist and Surrealist architecture and paintings.

IAU offers numerous internship opportunities for students in Barcelona at a wide range of businesses and organizations throughout the city. Service-learning options are also available for interested students. No previous Spanish experience is required.

Alumni

"What really made the trip and learning experiences unique were the professors and site visits. I’ve never had classes that were as thought provoking as the lectures we had. I had never thought as critically, either. I felt challenged and that I had to think of things from every perspective. This may have been because I’m a business major, but I think the professors made the classes interesting. If I had to take this at my home university, I don’t think I would have learned or had been engaged as much. There is something about experiential learning that is unique and lasting." - Cinara Foor, University of Akron, J Term.
