The College of Staten Island respects Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) students’ names and recognizes that students may be unable to go through a legal name change during their time at the college. The College is committed to using a student’s preferred name during their time as a student. Any student can provide their preferred name on CUNYFIRST or in person at the Registrar office located in 2A-107 by submitting a Preferred Name Request Form Forms are also available at the Registrar office.
CUNYFirst Preferred Name Change
- Go onto the CUNYFirst Webpage
- Log into your account
- Go to Student Center
- Scroll down to Personal Information and Click "Names" on the left hand side
- On that page you should be able to add a name and indicate that it is your preferred name.
- Please note that this will only change your name on CUNYFirst, it is not a legal name change. After making this update your preferred name will also be shown on class rosters and Blackboard.
The class roster that faculty download will reflect your preferred name the following semester after you update it in CUNYFirst or by submitting the form to Registrar. We recommend making these changes during the Summer or Winter sessions so your name is correct for the following semester.
Changing Student ID to Preferred Name
In order for a student to change their Dolphin Card, they must first submit the appropriate form to Registrar. Dolphin Card Services will then receive a notification of your preferred name change within a business day. A new Dolphin Card will then be issued. Students will have the option of retaking their photo. The replacement will be free. Dolphin Card Services is located on the first floor of building 3A.
Getting New Student Email and Computer Login Created
In order to receive a new student email and computer login you must submit a preferred name change form to Registrar. Information Technology will then be notified of your preferred name change. Once completed, you should receive an email in your current student account that your new email and computer login has been set up for you within 2 business days. If you have not received notification of a new email and computer login within 3 business days you should contact the College Helpdesk located in building 2A room 306. 718-982-HELP (4357). Your original computer login account will be disabled at the time your new computer login account is created and your original email account will be disabled within 1 month after that. Your printing balances will be transferred from your old login account to your new login account.
Changes in preferred name will only be made to CUNYFirst, Blackboard, class rosters, Dolphin Cards, computer login and student emails. Student transcripts and diploma require a legal name change.
