The College of Staten Island respects students’ names and recognizes that students may be unable to go through a legal name change during their time here. The College is committed to using a student’s preferred name during their time as a student. Any student can provide their preferred name on CUNYfirst or in person at the Registrar office located in 2A-107 by submitting a CUNYfirst Preferred Name Request Form. Forms are also available at the Registrar office. The entire process can be done online. Instructions below.
CUNYfirst Preferred Name Change
- Go onto the CUNYfirst Webpage
- Log into your account
- Go to Student Center
- Scroll down to Personal Information and Click "Names" on the left hand side
- On that page you should be able to add a name and indicate that it is your preferred name.
Please note that this will only change your name on CUNYfirst, it is not a legal name change. After making this update your preferred name will also be shown on class rosters and Blackboard.
How to change to Preferred name on Student Email/SLAS and Dolphin Card
Changing Student ID to Preferred Name
In order for you to receive a Dolphin Card with your preferred name, you must first have your preferred name marked on CUNYfirst by doing it yourself or by submitting a preferred name change form to Registrar. You must then submit this form Email/Student Identification Card Preferred Name Request Form by filling it out and emailing it from your CIX email to firstname.lastname@example.org. You can then request a new ID be printed with your preferred name by going to Dolphin Card Services located on the first floor of building 3A. The replacement will be free. You will have the option of retaking your photo.
Getting New Student Email and Computer Login Created
In order to receive a new student email and computer login you must first have your preferred name marked on CUNYfirst by doing it yourself or by submitting a preferred name change form to Registrar. You must then submit this form Email/Student Identification Card Preferred Name Request Form by filling it out and emailing it from your CIX email to email@example.com. Once your new email has been created, you will receive an email in your current student account that your new email and computer login has been set up. Follow the instructions in this email to access your new email. Your original computer login account (SLAS) will be disabled one week after your new computer login with preferred name is created. Your original email account will be disabled within 1 month after that. Your printing balances will be transferred from your old login account to your new login account.
Please note that the same form can be used to request both a new Student ID and Email/SLAS login. You may choose to do one and not the other.
The class roster that faculty download will reflect your preferred name the following semester after you update it in CUNYfirst or by submitting the form to Registrar. We recommend making these changes during the Summer or Winter sessions so your name is correct for the following semester.
Changes in preferred name will only be made to CUNYfirst, Blackboard, class rosters, Dolphin Cards, computer logins, and student emails. Student transcripts and diplomas require a legal name change.

If there is a typographical or spelling error in your legal name you need to go to Registrar in 2A-107 and request a form to make that change. Please bring documents that verify the error. Documents that you can bring are birth certificate, passport, social security card, driver’s license, or other documents issued by federal, state, or local government agencies.
This process for a preferred name is not the one you should take.
