Academic Freedom from a Unionist Perspective

We will describe and discuss the Palestine exception as well as the broader political context of the current attacks on academic freedom.

Please do join us on Zoom to hear from three important public intellectuals:

Anthony Alessandrini is Professor of English at Kingsborough Community College and of Middle Eastern Studies at The Graduate Center, CUNY, where he is also a member of the Committee on Globalization and Social Change. He is the author of Frantz Fanon and the Future of Cultural Politics; the editor of Frantz Fanon: Critical Perspectives; and the co-editor of “Resistance Everywhere”: The Gezi Protests and Dissident Visions of Turkey, and has also published a poetry chapbook, Children Imitating Cormorants. His most recent book is Decolonize Multiculturalism.

Ashley Dawson is Distinguished Professor at the College of Staten Island and The Graduate Center, CUNY; former editor of the AAUP’s Journal of Academic Freedom; and also co-editor of the essay collection Dangerous Professors.

Dania Rajendra is an Open Society Foundations Equality fellow. Previously, she was the inaugural director of Athena, the coalition working to stop Amazon from gobbling up our democracy and economy. She has been studying and trying to limit the threat vector of the political right – from neonazis to neoliberals – since 2010.
