Building Common Ground: Using Dialogue To Work Across Our Differences and Disagreements

With generous support from the Office of the President, the first event is an exciting in-person keynote address by a renowned Freirean scholar, artist, and activist, Dr. Antonia Darder.

Dr. Darder is Professor Emerita at Loyola Marymount University where she held the Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair in Ethics and Moral Leadership from 2011 to 2022. Previously, Dr. Darder was a Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The second edition of Dr. Darder’s book, The Student Guide to Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, was published in 2024 by Bloomsbury, UK. Dr. Darder will engage us in considering how building dialogue across differences is an ongoing relational human process that requires commitment, self-reflection, and a willingness to engage with diverse ways of seeing the world. By embracing dialogical approaches and fostering common ground, we can create learning environments that not only respect differences but also harness its possibilities as a genuine source of strength and innovation.
