Overview

The University of Newcastle combines a country setting with the advantages of city living. Situated on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline north of Sydney, the port city of Newcastle boasts wonderful beaches, low cost of living, a favorable climate, and casual lifestyle. Established in 1965, the university has two main campuses, Callaghan (the large campus) in Newcastle, and Central Coast Campus at Ourimbah (between Newcastle and Sydney) in New South Wales.

Today, more than 26,000 students including 3,500 international students from 80 countries can choose from undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by eleven facilities. Studying

A semester at the University of Newcastle runs fourteen weeks. Students are able to choose from the full range of courses in Architecture, Art and Design, Arts and Social Science, Economics and Music, Nursing and Science and Mathematics.

The program cost includes:  30 units = 3 courses = 12 US credits.

Students may also take:  40 units = 4 courses = 16 US credits (at an extra cost above the program cost.)

Students should plan to take either 30 or 40 units total for the semester.          

Study abroad students must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours/semester.

Living

The Student Union organizes many of the University's important social and cultural events. The Sports Union offers a variety of recreational activities, from hang-gliding, mountaineering, surfing, and snow skiing to archery, fencing, and the martial arts. Courses are available in sports such as scuba diving, golf and weight training.

The University boasts exceptional sporting facilities including a large multi-purpose sporting complex, featuring an indoor Olympic-standard swimming pool, a rock climbing wall, gymnasium and weight training room. Other sporting facilities at Callaghan campus include seven squash courts, a tennis complex, sports shop, five playing ovals, basketball, and volleyball courts. Wollatuka, the Aboriginal Studies Center, has several field trips, which are open to international students. Central to student life on campus is the University Union, which boasts more than 20,000 members. The Union organizes many of the University's important social and cultural events.

Housing

The University of Newcastle recognizes the importance of secure, affordable and comfortable accommodations and operates a range of free and confidential services to assist you in your search. The University offers four halls of residence at its Callaghan campus. All accommodations offer a range of social, cultural and sporting opportunities in an environment conducive to study and academic achievement. Students who choose to live off-campus may work through the International Student Support office to find accommodations (see off-campus accommodations below). The Student Support office maintains an interactive database of current accommodations and will help you locate a house or unit.

On-Campus Accommodation: costs depend on housing choice and are paid directly to Newcastle. Students will not be permitted to enter campus housing until the accommodation fee is paid in full. Students may not receive an invoice for accommodations.

It is strongly recommended that students apply early and follow the steps at the following link: On-Campus Housing. Applying early does not guarantee housing on campus. When filling out the on-line application form international students do not require a ”UAC Number.” The 'Student Number' is the reference number on the Letter of Offer which students receive after the application is reviewed.

Barahineban has 96 studio apartments which can be configured into single, double (for couples) or twin (for friends) occupancy. They are self contained including a private kitchenette, ensuite bathroom, and study area.
Edwards Hall can house 383 residents. Of those residents, 298 live in main hall rooms with catering and 85 live in self-catered beds in unit style buildings.
International House is unique in that it has a higher ratio of international to domestic students. In all, 226 residents meet a wide range of people from from diverse nationalities.
Evatt House has 211 rooms and residents enjoy the shortest walk to lecture rooms on campus. Rooms are configured in 5, 6, or 10 bedroom units.

Exploring

Student Clubs at UON run many events and outings each term.  During the pandemic they are operating and following government requirements. There are still sports activities taking place.  There is a student club called UNESN that run excursions and occasional weekend field trips for incoming study abroad and exchange students. Arts and Sciences at University of Canberra in Australia

Overview

Motivated CUNY students can study "Down Under" in Australia, a fascinating country with flora and fauna unique to this continent, at the University of Canberra in the national capital of Canberra. Founded in 1968, the University of Canberra offers a broad range of academic programs on a 200-acre traditional campus located in the Bruce section of Canberra. The campus is conveniently situated near the town center of Belconnen (a 10-minute walk from campus) which offers a full range of shopping and entertainment services. Canberra is located near the Brindabella Ranges, approximately 93 miles inland from the coast.  Canberra offers a four-season climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters relative to New York City.  The seasons are reversed from those in North America, with winters occurring June to August (with low temperatures 30-35 degrees F) and summers December to February (with high temperatures 75-80 degrees F).

Eligibility

The program is open to CUNY students only, who have at least 12-15 credits at the time of application, who are in good academic and student standing, and who have a minimum 2.75 GPA.  Students must have completed 30 credits on their transcript prior to their exchange abroad.  As there are a limited number of places, CSI students have a priority over CUNY students from other CUNY colleges.  These exchange programs require a certain level of maturity, independence, seriousness of purpose, and an ability to adapt to new environmental and academic conditions, and therefore require an in-person campus interview.

Students accepted to the exchange program will be registered for and maintain a minimum of 12 study abroad credits per semester.  CUNY student participants pay full-time semester CUNY tuition before departure.  Below are the estimated additional costs associated with a semester in Canberra.

Studying 

Macquarie University began in Sydney in 1964. Today, the University is a multifaceted institution situated in the heart of one of Australia’s leading high technology parks. The 125-hectare campus is located 12 miles northwest of Sydney’s central business district and enjoys a magnificent natural brush land setting. A modern shopping complex is located adjacent to the campus and there is a train on campus which goes into downtown Sydney every 4 minutes during peak hour.

The Macquarie University Library has a collection of over one million books and periodicals and provides seating for 1,850 readers. The library offers free and open access to the books and periodicals collections as well as lending privileges and reference services to all students. International students play an important role in the life of the University, with over 12,000 international students currently studying on campus within a total student population of 40,000. Macquarie University is ranked in the world’s top 100 universities (The Times’ Higher Education Supplement 2006).

Students choose 30 credit points (12 credits) - or at an extra cost can take 40 credit points (16 credits). Courses are also often referred to as “Units” at Macquarie. Please have second choice back up courses.  You may need them if a course is not offered, the class is full, or you cannot meet the prerequisite requirements for a particular course.

  • 3 units = 30 credit points = 3 US courses = 12 US credits.
  • 4 units = 40 credit points = 4 US courses = 16 US credits (at an extra cost above the program cost.)

Most units have a value of 10 credit points. Students should plan to take either 30 or 40 credit points total for the semester.

After acceptance, we recommend students select their preferred units and complete the MQ application in November for the Spring term, and in May for the Fall term.

Students can select and study units from all of MQ faculties (academic divisions). While selecting the units, students must consider the following:
Units are available in the enrolled semester (Session 1 = February to July OR Session 2 = July to December).
That units suit the students' level of study (UG = Undergraduate, PG = Postgraduate). 

In general, units from 1000 to 4000 level are UG subjects. Units above 4000 level are PG subjects which won't be available to undergraduate students.  The students have met the academic prerequisites or equivalent at their home University.  As a general rule, Macquarie units levels are:

  • 1st year UG = 1000 level
  • 2nd year UG = 2000 level
  • 3rd year UG = 3000 level

Business Internship

The internship unit will provide an opportunity for students to gain professional experience through a work placement in a not-for-profit organization, government agency, company or other industry partners in Sydney. 

  • Internships can be offered for credit during the semester for 10 credit points (1 undergraduate unit) 

  • Contact hours include up to 150 hours on your internship plus 12 hours of class contact throughout the semester 

  • You must be an undergraduate Study Abroad student undertaking a total of 4 units to be eligible to apply 

  • Additional AUD $575 internship fee 

Important Notice: The Australian Government has implemented travel restrictions which prevent most international travelers from arriving in Australia. We recommend that your students, DO NOT make any financial commitments, including Visa applications, booking accommodation or flights, until the Australian government has confirmed borders are open for international students. Macquarie University WILL NOT cover any financial commitments made prior to this restriction being officially lifted by the Australian Government.     

PREREQUISITES
• WAM 65%.    ( WAM = Weighted Average Mark and is similar to GPA.  WAM 65% = about a 2.6 GPA. )
• Students must have completed at least 18 months of university
• Only available to students enrolling in 4 units (16 US credits)
• Must apply by November 30 for Session 1 or April 30 for Session 2.

Living

Macquarie University life is more than study, and in addition to its excellent teaching facilities, it offers an abundance of social and sporting opportunities. The active Sports Association has more than thirty clubs for everything from athletics to water-skiing. There are squash, netball, tennis, and badminton courts available. In addition, there is a gym and weight-training area, a sauna, a brush track, and four sports fields. The Student Union organizes many activities on campus, including rock bands, Market Days, and regular art and craft activities.

Housing

Students at Macquarie University are housed in various accommodation options on and around campus, including seventy-five new five-bedroom townhouses, which are self-catered. In March 2021, Macquarie opened a brand new student accommodation in the center of campus. Residential Halls Macquarie University Village: accommodates students in 1/2/or 5 bedroom townhouses within an 800-bed living complex. Perfect for those wanting to live in a large social environment with private bathroom facilities.  This is a top choice for US study abroad students.

Dunmore Lang: live in an all inclusive college with a strong focus on artistic, recreational and educational pursuits. Full meal board, gym membership and free academic tutoring.

Robert Menzies: live in an all-inclusive college with strong academic and pastoral support. Both self-catered and full catered accommodations are offered. There are private, fully-furnished study bedrooms with shared bathrooms or private ensuite bathrooms.

Macquarie Apartments Herring Road Apartments: closest apartment to Macquarie Shopping Centre, train station and lecture halls Accommodates 3-6 students in 3,4, or 6 bedrooms. Great for students wanting to live right on campus.

Macquarie has a Study Abroad Scholarship that international study abroad students can apply for once they have been accepted to the program (have an Offer Letter from Macquarie University). It is an AUD $1,000 (Australian Dollar) scholarship.  Generally the absolute minimum GPA a student would need to apply is about 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale, but to be competitive, students would need a 3.5 GPA and above.​
