Each semester—beginning with the first semester in the program—Noyce Scholars are assigned to a host school and spend 50 hours per semester working with collaborating teachers in these high need schools. Each semester there is a different host school assignment so that Noyce Scholars can experience the differences between middle school and high school, between small schools and very large schools, and between neighborhood schools and magnet schools. The Noyce Scholars progress from observation, to tutoring individually and in groups, to “do nows”, to part of a lesson, to finally teaching a complete lesson. The goal of these host school assignments is to immerse the Noyce Scholars in the culture of the school and to prepare them to be effective teachers from the beginning of their teaching careers.
