Lifelong Learning Programs: A Bridge to Endless Possibilities

CSI's Lifelong Learning programs celebrate the joy of discovery and open doors to adults over the age of 55 and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in a welcoming, supportive community.

Whether participants are continuing their education, seeking to stay active, or simply curious to try something new and meet new people, there’s a place for them here.

  • Legacy: 90+ years of combined service to the local community
  • Distinctive model within CUNY system: Programming is shaped by the talents, interests, and learning goals of our students
  • Scope: Over 45+ course offerings each year
  • Community Partnerships: Actively engaging local private and public organizations in service to older adults and adults with IDD

We proudly offer two signature programs that inspire growth and connection:

The Creative Exchange Program serves NYC residents over the age 21 with IDD through learning experiences in visual and performing arts, writing, crafts, and media production on a vibrant college campus. Students engage in hands on, original projects that showcase their talent, teamwork, and self-expression. Whether behind the camera in CSI's film studio, performing in the College's Dance Studio, or crafting something new, participants experience the power of creativity as a bridge to confidence and community.

The origin story of Creative Exchange is traced to the 1970's when former residents of the Willowbrook State School were moved into community residences during the institution’s closure. Twelve activist parents approached the Elizabeth W. Pouch Center for Special People with concerns about the difficulties their adult children would experience as they reentered society. In collaboration with community professionals and the ‘Pouch Center’, CSI’s Continuing Education unit responded to the community needs of the time by developing Creative Exchange.

The program’s original purpose was to assist former residents of ‘Willowbrook’ with the social preparation needed to participate successfully in community life. Creative Exchange was cited in a staff report to President Carter as one of the first higher education programs of its kind nationally educating adults with IDD.

During the 1980’s, CSI Continuing Education leadership and its partners secured a contract with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), providing Creative Exchange with the resources to grow to serve 100+ adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) at no cost, in dedicated classroom spaces in the community, and at the College's former location in St. George. Today in person courses and events take place on the grounds of what was formerly the Willowbrook State School, which was transformed into CSI in 1993.

Founded by Professor Irene Deitch, the Options Program for Mature Learners provides adults over the age of 55 the opportunity to continue their educational journey in an inclusive, engaging environment. From wellness, to the humanities, and technology, every course generates meaningful learning and community-building experiences.
