The College of Staten Island Wound Care Nursing Education Program prepares registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree or higher for specialty practice in wound care. Through graduate-level didactic instruction, simulation-based clinical learning, and supervised precepted experiences, students develop the knowledge and clinical judgment needed to provide evidence-based wound prevention and management across diverse populations and healthcare settings.
Didactic Course: NRS 808 Advanced Care and Management of Wounds - 3 credits
Clinical Course: NRS 809 Role Practicum: Advanced Care and Management of Wounds - 2 credits
Clinical Experience: 40 hours: 16 hours of simulation-based clinical learning and 24 hours of supervised precepted clinical experience.
Cohort Size: Maximum of 10 students
Specialty Focus: Wound care
Coursework and clinical learning focus on wound assessment, prevention, treatment, evidence-based management, patient and caregiver education, interprofessional collaboration, and professional wound care nursing practice.
During the Fall or Spring semesters students complete didactic coursework (NRS 808 Advanced Care and Management of Wounds) on the Zoom platform and Brightspace Learning Management System. During the Winter (January) semester or Summer semester students complete a 40 hours Clinical course (NRS 809 Role Practicum: Advanced Care and Management of Wounds) which meets in-person on campus in simulation lab (16 hours) and supervised clinical learning (24 hours) in a wound care program. Supervised clinical learning must be completed with a WOC certified Registered Nurse as preceptor. Preceptors can be arranged by students or Wound Care faculty.
Certification
Students who complete this program are eligible to become certified through examination offered by the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Certification Board. Once passing the certification exam, Certification is granted through the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Certification Board (WOCNCB).

Program Eligibility
- Hold a current, unencumbered, registered professional nurse license in New York State.
- Possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher nursing degree.
- Have at least one year of clinical nursing experience following RN licensure.
- Demonstrate current clinical nursing experience within the five years preceding enrollment.
Prior wound care education, certification, or professional experience does not replace required program components.
How to Apply
Step 1: Apply to the College of Staten Island as a Visiting and Non-Degree Student
Complete the program application and submit the required eligibility documentation.
Step 2: Eligibility Review
The Program Director reviews submitted documentation to verify that program admission requirements have been met.
Step 3: Admission Decision
Eligible applicants selected for an available seat receive instructions for enrollment in NRS 808 Advanced Care and Management of Wounds.
Step 4: Complete College of Staten Island Registration
Following program approval, students complete the applicable College of Staten Island registration process.
Applicants who are not currently matriculated at CSI may need to complete the College's Visiting and Non-Degree Registration process.
Program Completion Requirements
To successfully complete the College of Staten Island Wound Care Nursing Education Program, students must:
- Earn a final grade of B or higher in NRS 808 Advanced Care and Management of Wounds and NRS 809 Role Practicum: Advanced Care and Management of Wounds.
- Complete all required simulation and supervised precepted clinical hours.
- Demonstrate satisfactory achievement of required clinical competencies.
- Completely required program evaluations.
All admitted students must complete all of the required didactic, simulation, precepted clinical, and evaluation components of the program.

Accreditation Status
The College of Staten Island Wound Care Nursing Education Program is seeking initial accreditation as a wound specialty nursing education program through the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society.
