Federal Work Study Employment

The Office of Student Life at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island, hires a number of students through the Federal Work-Study Program. 

All financial aid awards are determined based on the information provided on student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be considered for FWS you must answer “Yes” to the question, “Are you interested in being considered for work-study”? Students must meet eligibility requirements to receive federal aid, meet satisfactory academic progress, be matriculated in a degree-granting program, and be enrolled for at least 6 credits or more in the applicable semester. The earlier you file your FAFSA, the greater chance of being awarded with Federal Work-Study funding.

General Overview:

The Campus Center Attendants (CCA) are student employees who serve the College of Staten Island population by working in the Office of Student Life. Reporting to the Office Assistant for Student Life and the Associate Director for Student Life and Operations, the Campus Center Attendant is a part-time student staff member. The CCAs are responsible for assisting with the overall operation of Student Life, including customer service, monitoring building access, enforcing policy, and clerical support. 

Principle Responsibilities, Duties, and Job Functions:

  • Meet and greet visitors in the Office of Student Life. This includes greeting them as they walk in and assisting with their needs.
  • Act as a campus customer service agent for all incoming calls and questions from students and staff. 
  • Oversee the main line for student life, transferring calls, placing clients on hold or taking messages for staff, and communicating messages by written or email communication. 
  • Conduct regular rounds in Campus Center Spaces, documenting traffic patterns. 
  • Responsible for upholding Campus Center posting policy, including putting up flyers or removing flyers with no expiration date/or those past the expiration date. 
  • Enforce 1C guidelines, including food and beverage expectations in spaces. 
  • Report any emergencies to professional staff members in Student Life. 
  • Utilize software including Canva, CSI Connect, and Microsoft Forms.
  • Document facilities issues during building rounds. 
  • Other duties and assignments as designated by the supervisor.

General Overview 

The Game Room Attendants (GRA) are student employees who serve the College of Staten Island population by working in the Campus Center Game Room. The Campus Center Attendant is a part-time staff member who reports to the Office Assistant for Student Life and the Associate Director for Student Life and Operations. GRAs oversee the Game Room's stock and inventory of resources and supplies. The position requires handling questions and walk-ins, maintaining security standards, and providing customer service. 

Principle Responsibilities, Duties, and Job Functions:

  • Monitor the game room while on duty. When two GRAs are working, one should be on the floor while one remains in the office.
  • While on the floor, the GRA must:
    • Ensure no food or drink is being consumed in the space.
    • Monitor security and ensure people are using the equipment effectively. 
    • Remain visually aware of the space, reporting concerns to the Office of Student Life. 
    • Engage with students who are in the space. They may play a round or two of a game to engage with other students. 
    • While on the floor, the GRA should not use headphones or computers. They may sit at a table or a chair for a break, but they should remain active during the shift. 
  • While in the office, the GRA must:
    • Monitor student access via the electronic form. This includes verifying students have completed this. 
    • Provide students with the paper sign-in sheet if they cannot access the electronic version. 
    • Sign in and out equipment, verifying that the correct students return the proper games/equipment. 
    • Report any security situations to the Office of Student Life. 
    • While in the Game Room Office, the GRA should not be using headphones. 
  • Communicate with fellow GRAs about shift placement (e.g., who will work in the office and who will be on the floor). During multiple-hour shifts, these should change every hour or so. 
  • Keep the room neat and organized and report any cleanliness issues to the Office of Student Life. 
  • Uphold the Game Room Expectations

General Overview:

The Marketing and Media Assistant (MMA) are student employees who serve the College of Staten Island population by assisting with social media in the Office of Student Life. As a Marketing and Media Assistant, you will be responsible for creating compelling visual content that supports our social media strategy across various platforms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, YouTube etc.). This position works primarily out of the Involvement Center with direct supervision from the Deputy Director of Student Life with a dotted line to the Associate Director of Student Life and Office Assistant for Student Life. 

Principle Responsibilities, Duties, and Job Functions:

  • Design and create visually appealing and engaging social media content, including static images, animated graphics, short-form videos, GIFs, and other multimedia assets, bulletin boards and bright signs.
  • Develop and maintain a consistent visual identity and brand aesthetic across all social media platforms.
  • Utilize CSI Connect for Student Life Initiatives and college website. 
  • Brainstorm and develop creative concepts for social media campaigns and content series.
  • Adapt and optimize designs for different social media platforms and formats (e.g., stories, reels, posts, ads).
  • Stay up to date on the latest social media trends, design tools, and best practices.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Present design concepts and ideas to the team and incorporate feedback.
  • Ensures all designs are ADA compliant

Building Manager – Graduate/Professional Staff:

            General Overview:

The Building Managers (BM) are professional employees who serve the College of Staten Island population by representing the Office of Student Life after hours. Reporting to the Associate Director for Student Life and Operations, the Building Manager is a part-time position. BMs supervise the building after hours and provide facilities management and student wellness/supervision. 

Principle Responsibilities, Duties, and Job Functions: 

  • Ensures facilities comply with applicable policies and setup. This includes checking conference rooms to ensure they are correctly set each night. 
  • Execute emergency procedures when necessary (e.g., Fire Alarm, Student Wellness) while liaising with the Department of Public Safety. 
  • Oversight of event management, including technical support and facilities set up/take down.
  • Documents maintenance and custodial issues while on nightly rounds.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from students after hours. 
  • Maintains knowledge of various tech equipment. 
  • Supports internal and external clients during events. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

eneral Overview:

The Technical Support Assistants (TSAs) are student employees who serve the College of Staten Island population by assisting with event management, specifically setting up technical aspects. The Student Life Technical Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the set-up needed for an event and setting up all the proper equipment, such as microphones, video recorders, or broadcasting tools. TSAs also program lighting or other visual aids and help troubleshoot and repair problems with AV operations. TSAs resolve computer, phone, tablet, modem, internet, network, and software issues. This position reports to the Associate Director of Student Life and the Office Assistant for Student Life. 

Principle Responsibilities, Duties, and Job Functions:

  • Set up technical equipment for events. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Audio/Visual 
    • Laptops
    • Microphones
    • Projectors
  • Provide technical support during events in the Campus Center. 
  • Oversee and manage Student Life equipment, including testing to ensure it works, updating it, and researching troubleshooting tips in the event it malfunctions.
  • Collaborate with IT to support events. 
  • Responsible for upholding Campus Center posting policy, including putting up flyers or removing flyers with no expiration date/or those past the expiration date. 
  • Enforce 1C guidelines, including food and beverage expectations in spaces. 
  • Report any emergencies to professional staff members in Student Life. 
  • Utilize software including Canva, CSI Connect, and Microsoft Forms.
  • Document facilities issues found during events. 
  • Other duties and assignments as designated by the supervisor.

Applying for Federal Work Study Positions


Federal Work-study is packaged centrally through CUNY and preference is given to students who file the FAFSA early. Students awarded FWS funding can view and accept their awards through CUNYfirst --> Student Service Center --> Finances --> View Financial Aid or Accept/Decline Awards.

Once awarded and accepted:

  • View and apply for jobs via FWS Job Bank
  • Student will be contacted to schedule an interview by prospective supervisors
  • Supervisors notify FA office and begin placement process
  • Student submits required hiring documents

All of these processes can take time, so it is highly recommended to apply early, be patient, and to keep checking student’s CIX email for the next steps in the process.  You cannot begin work until notified that all paperwork has been accepted and processed.

If you have not been awarded federal work-study and would like to be considered for an award, students can be wait-listed by submitting FWS Wait List. Please note – This request does not guarantee that you will be offered a work-study award. You must have submitted a FAFSA application for the College, be matriculated and enrolled for at least 6 credits to be considered for an award. Awards are made on a first come first served basis until funding is exhausted or Job positions are filled.
