30 And Above

Taking courses for 30 and above (30+) at the School of Education

Once you obtain your master’s degree in Education, you have a couple of options. There are Post-Master’s Advanced Certificates (issued by CSI) and Additional Certificates (issued by the NYSED). For the Additional Certificate(s), it is your responsibility to apply to the state; we offer courses that satisfy the requirements by the state to obtain these certificates.

  • Special Education Childhood/Adolescence Education Advanced Certificate
Special Education, especially in Grades 7-12 is one of the high-need areas. Obtaining the Special Education Advanced Certificate will make you very marketable; many schools strongly encourage educators to earn the Advanced Certificate rather than the Additional Certificate in Students with Disabilities. The only yet significant difference between the two certificates is that the Special Education Advanced Certificate at CSI requires the practicum in Special Education (4 credits) in addition to the four courses required for the Additional Certificate.
    For more information, see:

Special Education Childhood Education (Advanced Certificate)
Special Education Adolescence Education (Advanced Certificate)

  • Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Advanced Certificate
TESOL is another high-need area in Education. Obtaining TESOL certificate along with Special Education should make you very marketable. If you are in Special Education Childhood/Adolescence Generalist program (Sequence 1) and interested in obtaining the TESOL Advanced Certificate once you complete your master’s, take EDP 675 as your elective course. TESOL program offers two options: regular (though many TESOL courses are offered online and/or hybrid format) and fully online.
    For more information, see:

Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (Post Master's Advanced Certificate)

  • Bilingual Extension Certificate
If you will be obtaining the TESOL Master’s or Advanced Certificate, and you are bilingual, Bilingual Extension would be a nice addition. Among five courses required for this Certificate, three overlaps with the TESOL Master’s/Advanced Certificate program. In other words, you only need two more courses to obtain this certificate in addition to the TESOL Master’s/Advanced certificate.
    For more information, see:

    Bilingual Extension Certification (Advanced Certificate)

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders Advanced Certificate
To obtain this certificate, you need to take EDP 701-704 (preferably in sequence) and earn B or above for all courses. If you are in Special Education Childhood/Adolescence Generalist program (Sequence 1), you can take one of the required courses (preferably EDP 701) as one of your electives toward your master’s degree. The other three courses will be counted toward your 30+ once you obtain the master’s degree. EDP 701 and 702 are offered every fall semester, and EDP 703 and 704 are offered every spring.
    For more information, see:

    Autism Spectrum Disorders (Advanced Certificate)

  • Leadership Certificate (School Building & School District)
If you are interested in becoming a school administrator (e.g., Principal, Assistant Principal, Superintendent), you will need this certificate. At CSI, you will be able to earn the certificate in both School Building and School District level (You must pass the NYS Certification Tests in order to obtain the Certificate). To apply for this program, you need at least four years of teaching experience. Most courses in this program meet on weekends and in summer.
